ALGEBRA 2 TEACHER: Mrs. Joanne Schmitt Email: Joanne_Schmitt@csd49.org PRE-REQUISITE: Algebra I, Geometry COURSE DESCRIPTION: Algebra II focuses on the concepts of functions and relations with emphasis on linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, radical, and rational functions. The student will apply algebraic concepts to a variety of real-world situations that can be modeled mathematically. TEXTBOOKS: Burger, Edward B., Chard, David J. and Hall, Earlene J., Algebra 2, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 2011. Each student will be given the option to check out a textbook that they can keep at home at all times, or use the online textbook at my.hrw.com. Each student is issued a password for my.hrw.com The teacher will have a classroom set for the students to use in class. CLASS RULES: RESPECT 1. Be on time & prepared Please be in your seat with all materials ready to begin when the bell rings! 2. Be polite & respectful Please remember that this applies both to the teacher and to other students. 3. Be on task and follow school rules Please use all the time that you are given for working on the assignments or group work for this class. Assignments for other classes should be set aside for another time unless your math work is complete. Calculator games are not acceptable and ipods or other listening devices will be collected if out during lecture and participation time. Food and drink should not be brought to class, the only exception is plain water. ** CELL PHONES SHOULD BE TURNED OFF & STOWED AWAY. THIS IS YOUR WARNING! ** 1st offense: cell phones or other devices will be confiscated and returned at the end of class. Repeated offenses: cell phones or other devices will be confiscated and returned at the end of the school day. Extreme number of offenses: cell phones or other devices will be confiscated and returned to the parent. In addition, students may enroll in Khan Academy: KhanAcademy.org and select me as their coach using the code FQM764 I will be able to suggest specific sections and videos, and follow their progress and give them extra credit points. If the online help is not sufficient, TUTORING with the teacher is also available as follows: 2:20-3:00 or later on most days of the week. A few Tuesdays I have meetings after school ABSENCES/MAKE-UP WORK: When absent, a student has one class (day) to make up work for each excused class absence. The student should come at lunch or after school or look online to determine what needs to be made up or to schedule a missed test. Scheduling a make-up exam should be done immediately upon returning to school. When absent only on the day of a test, the student is expected to take the make-up test at lunch or after school on the day he/she returns to school. When absences (personal or school related) are known about in advance, the student must get assignments that will be missed and schedule any tests that will be missed before leaving school. GRADING 30%—Daily Average (homework, homework quizzes, class activities, participation and class presentations) 70%—Test and Project Average (NOTE: Students will receive a teacher-generated grade-status printout after tests so that they and their parents may stay informed of their progress. Any student whose test grade is below 70% must complete a test edit within one week. If a student scores below 60% they must also retake the test after completing the test edit and prior to the next test.) Each student is expected to complete his or her own work at all times. Please refer to the student Honor Code in the Student Handbook. Homework/Daily • Minimum of 9 homework/weekly grades per 9-­‐weeks grading period • Make-­‐up work: Students have a period of time equal to the length of the absence to turn in makeup work or to have developed a plan with the teacher for making up the work, according to student handbook policy. • For class work and homework, the requirements are: 1) Write down the problem & show all work (no work, no credit, no exceptions) 2) Late work is NOT accepted. It is necessary to come to class prepared with the work completed by the due date. Students can expect to have written assignments daily. Credit for homework will be given in a variety of ways, including: 1. Student grading in class 2. Teacher grading of entire assignment or selected problems 3. Student board presentation 4. Group cooperative project 5. Homework quiz 6. Problems of the Week All homework is due on a daily basis. Students who do not have homework complete when class begins shall stay at lunch or after school that day to complete their next assignment as well as the incomplete one. Tests/Projects • Minimum of 3 test/quiz scores per 9-­‐weeks grading period • Re-­‐test contract/policy: o Re-­‐tests are permitted for up to a score of 80%. o Retests are allowed after attending required tutorials and completing a test edit form, within one week of being notified of a failing grade in class or on Skyward. • Projects/Major Papers will be graded with a rubric. A rubric will be given in class when the project/major paper is assigned and will be followed for grading.
