Helping students select their
Sixth Form and Higher
Education subjects
What is it?
This unique four page guide helps students make an informed choice of Sixth Form
subjects and to select an appropriate Higher Education course.
The guide is derived from a detailed analysis of a student’s Morrisby assessment. It brings
together all aspects of his or her profile, including specific career suggestions, with 16+ and
HE subject options.
An individual printed personal supplement is prepared for each student. This provides an
objective analysis of the subjects most relevant to potential career paths. Subjects are also
analysed to show the student’s level of interest in each. An online (pdf) version can be
accessed by the student’s Careers Adviser using the secure Morrisby Manager section of
Morrisby.com.
New for this year, schools can customise the guide so that it reflects more closely the
subjects offered at their school. By completing a simple form, we will ensure that this guide
is even more relevant than before. And also new this year, we are providing, on request, a
separate copy of the guide for every candidate.
What are the elements?
Page 1: Introduction to subject choice and the purpose of the analysis.
Page 2: Personal Subject Profile
Page 3: Higher Education disciplines
Page 4: Comprehensive list of web and library resources.
“With Looking Forward, Morrisby has given career
guidance practitioners the missing link!”

Using the Looking Forward Guide
Guide for choosing Sixth Form subjects & HE courses
Looking Forward: A-Level subject analysis
Encourage students to choose subjects that:
 are interesting and enjoyable so that they can complete the course
 they are good at, and suit their style of learning
 fit into their future plans. i.e. a) If they have a career in mind, ask them to look at the subjects that
are desired or required. b) If they are thinking of HE, ask them to look at the choices that meet
University requirements eg many universities like traditional subjects (English, Maths, Science etc)
whereas others don’t like similar subjects (Economics and Business Studies), and some discount
Gen Studies, Critical Thinking etc. It is important that they do their research before making a
decision.
Personal Subject Profile (A-Levels, IB)






Displays the relevance of 26 ‘typical’ sixth form subjects to the careers suggested in the Morrisby
Report (Shaded bar). NB. The options available at a particular institution may be a little different.
The longer the bar, the more relevant the subject is to the careers suggested.
Subjects which are required by specific careers are highlighted (‡: Main 12 Careers, †: Associated
Careers).
The candidate’s level of interest for each subject is also shown in order of prominence (Black line).
For some candidates, the subjects required for their suggested careers may be very clear. If they
are also interested in these subjects, then the choice can be relatively straightforward. If there is a
shortfall in interest then this would need to be discussed.
Some candidates’ career suggestions may not show up as requiring any specific subjects, or the
careers may relate to many subjects. In this case the candidate has many more options available
so they will need to take account of their interests, as indicated by the black line.

Looking Further: Relevant HE options
Higher Education is a huge investment, so if your candidates are choosing HE, be sure that:
 they choose a course they’re good at, enjoy and find interesting, so they can finish and get a good
result
 they choose a university that suits them. They vary hugely in size, facilities, specialisms etc.
 the degree fits with their future. If they have a specific career plan, make sure the degree fits with
this. If they don’t have a specific career in mind choose something that keeps their options open
HE disciplines


A number of HE disciplines most closely associated with the career suggestions are presented in
order of relevance, including key stats & tariff range. The shaded bar shows how relevant the
subject is to the suggested careers.
Again, degree courses required by specific careers suggested are highlighted (‡: Main, †:
Associated). In most cases, there will be a wide choice as most careers don’t require a specific
degree subject.
Suggestions and associations in this guide are based on typical routes, so it is possible that alternative
options are available.
