Dear Parents/Carer

Headmaster:

Aydin Önaç,

B.Mus., BSc., ARCM FRSA

The Morrisby Profile

As highlighted at the Year 10 Induction Evening we have an opportunity to offer the Morrisby Profile. The service includes psychometric testing. This objectively measures a pupil’s key underlying abilities, certain aspects of personality (relevant to choice of course and career) and takes individual interest into account. An individual profile is then produced by computer (which the pupil keeps). This includes career ideas which fit in with each pupil’s individual overall profile.

The testing itself takes approximately two and a half hours – but an important part of the process is that each pupil taking part will meet a professionally qualified guidance counsellor to discuss their profile, how it was derived and to talk about its implications in terms of A Level subject choice or other courses or options which may be relevant. The conversation can also project forward to choice of university or college course and graduate entry careers, as appropriate. The measurement of areas of greater strength lends realism to this discussion. The test will take place on Saturday 28 th February 2015.

Your son’s participation in this exercise is voluntary and the cost per pupil for the Morrisby Profile is £69.

Assistance may be available from the Foundation for anyone in particular financial need. Please apply to the

Headmaster in writing and your application for support will be considered, in the strictest confidence. Please complete the permission slip and return it to Mrs. Wells, Room 10 by 28 th November. Payment should be made via our on-line system (sQuid). Should you experience any problems in connection with the on-line system, please do not hesitate to contact the Finance Department by email financeoffice@saintolaves.net

and they will assist with your query.

The dates and arrangements for this process are outlined overleaf. As soon after the test as possible we will organise feedback to the pupils in groups of 3 or 4. We will issue the Morrisby booklet which provides some twenty-five pages containing the test results and feedback, a report on the vocational questionnaire, career suggestions and advice on the next steps. The Morrisby report is one very important addition to help your son in his thinking on Sixth Form choices and career paths. There will be other things which will affect career choices and an opportunity to discuss all of these will be made available in Year 11 as part of the school’s programme of support and advice.

The Morrisby test was first used widely in independent schools, it is particularly suited to 11-18 schools where all or most of the pupils continue into Higher Education. Please read the attached information about the service and also about the Morrisby Profile itself. You can also access further information, including responses to “frequently asked questions” on www.morrisby.com

.

If you have any further questions concerning this process, please contact Mrs Wells on jwells@saintolaves.net

.

Yours faithfully

John Greenwood

THE MORRISBY PROFILE

The Morrisby Profile is produced by the Morrisby Organization and has been successfully used in schools and colleges for the past 20 years. This system combines aptitude testing with an objective personality test (not a questionnaire), and an interest inventory. These elements are used to produce a detailed report with several career recommendations. Although this system can be described as using “tests”, there is no question of passing or failing. The intention is simply to build up an objective profile of individual strengths which are then used to help in careers guidance.

The tests are designed to show what a person’s greatest strengths are and how best they can be developed rather than just showing how good or bad a person's scores are in comparison with the year group. Consequently, the report makes very positive, although realistic, comments and suggestions and no one need fear failure or adverse comparisons. The tests comment on individual work styles and learning methods as well as on abilities and often highlight potential strengths that, for lack of opportunity, have not been noticed or developed.

Before the test session, students complete a questionnaire (The Morrisby Vocational Questionnaire). This covers personal details such as age, subjects studied, etc., includes a careers interest inventory and an occupational values test. These are designed to discover what sort of jobs (commercial, outdoor, etc.) students are considering and what they see as particularly important in a job (reward, autonomy, interest and so on). If these interests and values appear to be at odds with their abilities, the report will indicate this. However, nothing on this questionnaire influences the actual scores in the test session.

After the test session, a fully detailed written report will be provided for each student, together with a set of notes for the careers adviser who has been trained to interpret and feedback the test results to the client.

Feedback can take place in a group setting.

This year the Morrisby test will take place in the Great Hall on Saturday, 28th February, 2015 at 09.00 finishing at approx. 12.15. The test has been scheduled on this morning to ensure that no curriculum teaching time is lost.
