CAREERS & EDUCATION SERVICES Gordon.ceslondon@gmail.com www.ceslondon.com DO YOU USE THE MORRISBY TEST? If yes, it is likely that: you are paying too much for it you are not making use of all the benefits you are not feeding it back in a thorough enough manner If you are not using it, you are missing out on: a good way to boost your students’ confidence a good way to increase their motivation a good way to increase their awareness of the career options open to them a good way to identify their particular strengths and how to plan for the future useful information on which students are underperforming and an analysis of the aptitude level of the year group Morrisby is also a very good way to get parents involved with the school and increase their awareness of the careers and higher education options available to their child. Better informed parents help prevent poor decision making on behalf of their child. The Morrisby test is very popular for use across years 10-12. The best way to find out about it is to look at the website www.morrisby.com but basically it is an interest questionnaire, and a battery of aptitude and personality tests. As well as giving absolute scores, it gives a profile of the student’s strengths and weaknesses. It also produces career suggestions which are very helpful in giving the student direction at this point in their life. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MY APPROACH Whilst the test report is useful in its own right, the process is far more valuable if you get professional feedback, and I believe that my approach is the most thorough available. My method is very structured and takes 40-50 minutes. I discuss the scores and personality profile with the student and their parents (I always invite parents to attend), look at the results of the interest questionnaire, discuss the suggested careers and then discus the short, medium and long term career options and the decisions to be made. After the interview I give a detailed written summary and my business email to enable students/parents to seek further advice. This service is on-going, with no time bar. Some agencies only give group feedbacks or short 20 minute interviews, and most discourage parents from attending, because they tend to ask the more demanding questions (which make the process more valuable). One, very expensive, service is trying to move its client base online, which, whilst far cheaper for them to run, does not even offer a report (you have to print your own). On my website I explain the process in more detail and give testimonials. I work in a range of independent schools across the country, and am happy for you to contact any of my schools to obtain a reference. I also offer other services; such as using the coursefinder interest guide as a basis for advising students/parents on the higher education options available, mock interviews with year 12/13, and talks to parents and students. I publish a (free) fortnightly careers & education newsletter, in which I sum up information from the specialist and national press that I think is useful for people working in careers. If you are not currently receiving it simply send me your email. I have a team of very experienced and skilled staff, and am thus able to cover large school contracts as well as small cohorts. COSTS Given the effect the financial crisis is having on many parents and schools I have decided to reduce my testing fees for the 2013/14 academic year and to decrease the number of price bands. From September 2013 my charges will be: 100+ students £52 per test plus vat 60-99 students £55 per test plus vat 30-59 students £58 per test plus vat 10-29 students £61 per test plus vat Feedback charges will be £350 per day (plus vat). I normally see 8 students/parents per day and in every case produce very detailed interview summary notes, and give the client my business email to enable them to ask any follow up queries. There is no time bar on this service. I also give them the option of signing up for free to my fortnightly careers newsletter. Thus it is possible to take the test and get feedback from one of the most experienced users in the country for less than £100+ vat. This should compare favourably with your current supplier in terms of price, as well as quality and follow up service. I know some companies charge over £200 for a test and feedback, and some charge you an annual membership fee. Gordon Collins
