Course description: How values play a role in the practice of science. Values and practices of scientific communities, historical development of particular scientific values and practices (e.g., objectivity, proper methods for communicating results, proper treatment of human or animal experimental subjects), interactions between cultures that influence development of scientific values and practices. Interactions between the embedded culture of science and the larger embedding culture, exploring how the interplay between these cultures affects the values and practices of each. (GE Area V)
Course requirements and grading:
3 reading response essays , 500 words each (lowest grade dropped, 20%)
5 case study responses , 300 words each (lowest grade dropped, 20%)
2 research reports , posted on D2L (15%)
Longer essay , 900 words (15%)
Final exam (20%)
Class participation, including 1 required online lecture discussion (10%)
First Case Study response (“Bob Bailey Case”) to be discussed on D2L and submitted by 11:59 pm F Feb. 15
Reading Response #1 due in class Tu Feb. 26
