Medical terminology will be presented through a study of the process of word building using medical root words, combining forms, prefixes and suffixes. Terms related to body systems, radiology, pathology and medical abbreviations will be studied. Course Goals: Upon completion of this course, each student will have a solid foundation in the specialized language of medicine so that they are able to define, spell and analyze common medical terms as well as understand the context in which these medical terms are used. Student Outcomes: 1. Students will demonstrate the knowledge of medical terminology vocabulary. 2. To provide the student with knowledge of medical root words, combining forms prefixes and suffixes. 3. To teach the student how to build and interpret medical terms using word-building concepts. 4. To promote accuracy in spelling and usage of medical terms using word-building concepts. 5. To provide a self-directed instructional experience for the adult learner. You are encouraged to complete all of the activities listed under each module for each chapter. These activities, such as flashcards will be extremely helpful to you in this course. Your text book also comes with StudyWare™ in the form of a CD which will help facilitate your learning. You will be required to view them prior to taking each chapter quiz. This is NOT a self-passed course. You will need to complete all assigned work/quizzes by the date due or you will not be able to move on to the next chapter. Therefore if you do not stay on schedule you may not complete the course on time. Please understand that turning in work late is not acceptable but I do understand that life happens. Quizzes and Examinations There will be a total of fourteen (14) chapter quizzes, the midterm exam and final exam that all count towards your grade. The midterm exam will be taken after you have completed Chapter 8 and the final exam is taken after the comprehensive review chapter. All of your class points will be from these quizzes. There are no discussion boards in this course. You will also be required to take a course quiz and a demographics survey prior to beginning the course. (these do not count toward your grade) Process: After you finish reading the Welcome Letter and the Syllabus you will take the course quiz and demographics survey. You must read the welcome letter and syllabus and MUST take the demographics survey and course quiz before you will be allowed to access the rest of the course materials. You may take the course quiz as many times as you need to earn a grade of 70 or MED-106 Medical Terminology above. (this is the ONLY quiz that you may take more than one time, all other quizzes are one time only) 1. Follow the Modules tab from top to bottom and that will help lead you through this course. 2. All course requirements must be completed by 11:59 PM on December 11th, 2015. You will not have access to any course materials after December 7th, 2015 at 11:59 PM, so you will need to make sure you have enough time to complete all requirements prior to that time. Grading Grading and Scale: Chapter Quizzes=50% Mid-Term Exam=25% Final Exam=25%. Scale: 100 to 90 = A; 89 to 80 = B; 79 to 70 = C; 69 to 65 = D; 64 and lower = F.
