Bang! Hopalong Cassidy Takes Darwin by Derham Groves and Desert Country: A History of Newhaven by Alan Powell. American actor William Boyd (1895–1972) portrayed Hopalong Cassidy, the cowboy hero created by American author Clarence E. Mulford, in a series of popular B-grade films between 1935 and 1948. In 1954 Boyd toured Darwin, Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide in Australia for 16 days to raise money for ‘crippled children’ (young polio victims) and attracted huge crowds wherever he went. The Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most isolated estates in Australia. Located more than 350 kilometres northwest of Alice Springs, it covers an area of more than 260,000 hectares. This history of European contact with Newhaven began life as a commissioned historical report for the Central Land Council (CLC). It was submitted in evidence in the Newhaven Land Claim under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976, which led to the first Native Title Consent Determination between traditional owners and a non-government conservation organisation.
