1 POLICY
This outlines the career advice policy for schools in the Northern Territory (NT).
2 BUSINESS NEED
Schools with permission to provide secondary education have been allocated a Career
Adviser position that is external to the staffing formula.
Each school must nominate a Career Adviser who will be responsible for the provision of
career advice and career development programs to students.
Career Advisers can be required to undertake teaching duties up to 25% of a normal
teaching load, and these teaching duties should be related to student career
development.
3 RESPONSIBILITIES
The role of Career Advisers is to plan, develop and oversee the implementation of career
development programs and to provide prompt careers information and advice to students
in the school. Within this general role they should fulfil the following responsibilities:
•
develop career education programs in the school to meet student needs and
Northern Territory Board of Studies requirements and assist teachers with the
delivery of these programs
• coordinate the provision of work experience and work placements
• provide individual assistance to students regarding subject selection, career options
and career pathways
• liaise with industry, training providers, higher education institutions, Career
Educators Association of the Northern Territory and other organisations to establish
and maintain a network of contacts and to ensure currency of knowledge
• establish and maintain career information and resource area for students, ensuring
all information is current
• participate in professional learning activities and relevant forums

• promote and coordinate student participation in career development activities and
programs such as Futures Expo, Pathways Mentorship Program, Transition
Planning.
4 COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY
This policy will be displayed on the Department of Education website and will be available to
the public.
5 REVIEW
This policy will be reviewed every two years.
