Name: Date: Period: 7-2 Cell Analogy Project Widget Production: In a far away city called Grant City, the main export and production product is the steel widget. Everyone in the town has something to do with steel widget making and the entire town is designed to build and export widgets. The town hall has the instructions for widget making, widgets come in all shapes and sizes and any citizen of Grant can get the instructions and begin making their own widgets. Widgets are generally produced in small shops around the city; these small shops can be built by the carpenter's union (whose headquarters are in town hall). After the widget is constructed, they are placed on special highway systems which can deliver the widget anywhere in the city. In order for a widget to be exported, the carts take the widget to the postal office, where the widgets are packaged and labeled for export. Occasionally, too many widgets are produced. These extra widgets are sent to the warehouse for storage. Sometimes widgets don't turn out right, and the "rejects" are sent to the scrap yard where they are broken down for parts or destroyed altogether. The town powers the widget shops and carts from a hydraulic dam that is in the city. The entire city is enclosed within a large wooden fence, only the postal trucks (and citizens with proper passports) are allowed outside the city. Assignments: 1. After reading the information about widget production, fill out the chart below. Use your cell organelle information to help you match the city structures to organelles. 2. Use a different model to create your own analogy of a cell. You can choose from a school, an airport, a mall, a sports stadium, a hospital, a country, etc. 3. Be Creative! The form of your presentation is your choice! Cell Analogy Grading Rubric Your Score Teacher’s Score CATEGORY 10 8 6 4 Cell Organelles Every item that needs to be identified is present and has an analogy. It is clear which analogy goes with which structure. Most items (8090%) that need to be identified are present and have an analogy. It is clear which analogy goes with which structure. Less than 70% of the items that need to be identified are present and have analogies and/or it is not clear which analogies goes with which item. Cellular Functions All cellular functions are correct and are included in with the analogy statement. Most (80-90%) cellular functions are correct and are included in with the analogy statement. Appropriate analogy All analogies fit well with the organelle’s function. Spelling and Grammar All labels and statements are typed with no spelling or grammar errors. Most (80-90%) of the analogies fit well with the organelle’s function. Labels and statements have 15 spelling or grammar errors. Some (70-80%) that need to be identified are present and have an analogy. It is sometimes unclear which analogy goes with which structure. Some cellular functions (7080%) are correct or some may not be included in with the analogy statement. Some (70-80%) of the analogies fit well with the organelle’s function. Labels and statements have 5-10 spelling or grammar errors, or some labels or statements are not typed. Visual, Creativity, Original Thinking Collage is creative, colorful and visually appealing. All analogies are unique, showing thought, research, and an excellent understanding of the organelle. Collage is not completely colorful or may have some visual qualities that detract from the appeal. Some analogies are those commonly used. Collage is not visually appealing and/or does not show creativity or original thinking. 50 Possible Points Student Total Points = __________ Teacher Total Points = ___________ Collage is creative, colorful and visually appealing. Most analogies are unique, with a few being commonly used analogies. Fewer than 70% of the cellular functions are correct and/or are included in with the analogy statement. Fewer than 70% of the analogies fit well with the organelle’s function. Labels/statements have more than 10 spelling grammar errors.
