October/November 2015's Highlights

October/November 2015’s Highlights
Dear members and fellow Internal Audit professionals,
The Chapter held its Annual General Meeting on October 22nd during
which new board members were introduced to the attendance. This was also
the occasion to thank Raj Devadas, the Chapter’s President for the past 2
years, for his involvement and dedication as he is moving forward to
tackle new challenges. I now occupy the President’s role and am looking at
working with the new board members to provide services to IIA Calgary
members while dealing with the economic downturn and training budgets
that are being slashed throughout organizations. As discussed during the
AGM, our priorities for 2015/16 are the following:
Free-of-Charge Services:
◦ “Brown bag” lunch sessions to provide an opportunity to collect PD
points, network and stay current on audit topics.
◦ Stay in touch through Newsletters, the Website and the email
Training & Networking:
◦ Continue to offer a mix bag of training sessions & Networking
opportunities to IIA members:
◦ Breakfast / Luncheon / Dinner / Golf tournament / Social
◦ Joint events [Breakfasts, Luncheons, Dinners, Socials,
Seminars, Workshops] with other professional organizations
 Workshops / Seminars (e.g. Auditing Tools and
◦ CAE Roundtable event to build a relationship with Calgary’s Audit
Senior Management whom support the IIA designation.
For the members who couldn’t attend the AGM, we take stock of what we
have accomplished by your Board during 2014-15. Our accomplishments
were recognized by the IIA as the Chapter obtained the Platinum status for
the activities organized during the year as follows:
Our monthly luncheons have been well attended. We have 30-60
members attending each event. This shows that the topics resonate well
with our members.
We have introduced breakfast & dinner sessions and have seen that these
programs are also well attended. These programs are in addition to the
Volunteers are key since the IIA Chapters are run by these dedicated
volunteers who give their time and efforts. In the past years, we have seen
a drop in the number of volunteers which we are progressively reversing.
Our frequent notices in the newsletter and website have resulted in
renewal of board members and volunteers.
We have held joint programs with the ISACA in order to encourage
members to mingle at social events and luncheon. This is a fantastic
opportunity to network with members of other professional associations.
For our student members and for our members who are beginners in the
profession we have made the job boards free for employers to post
advertisements on our website.
We have introduced two new benefits programs that provide discounts
for local chapter members, while generating sponsorships for the
Chapter’s activities.
We introduced the program ‘Become an IIA exam author”, as details of
which are provided in this newsletter. It’s a great opportunity to give
back to our profession.
For senior IIA executives, the Chapter is working on a Chief Audit
Executive event to provide fellowship and networking opportunities to the
leaders in our profession.
For the past several years we were not breaking even while conducting
luncheons and IIA events. Financially, we are beginning to show
surplus since we have sponsorships and increased attendance from our
luncheon/breakfast events.
Your Board is meeting every other month. If you feel that there is something
that we are missing out or would like your Board to focus, send an email to
the IIA Gmail account and let us know how you would want to contribute to
the Chapter.
