President’s Message
Hello everyone!
Spring is finally here! The winter wasn’t too bad, but it is nice to have the longer days and
extra day light. Helps lift the spirits!
The last few months have been a busy one for the chapter. We have been able to deliver
luncheon topics on Human Capital Transformation, New Emerging Risks and are holding a
two day risk seminar April 24 & 25th. For further information see our events section.
I want to thank those who registered for our February Social and only to find it canceled
two days prior to the event. Unfortunately there were circumstances beyond our control
which required us to cancel. I promise that we will make up for this in May, and celebrate
the year in style so please stay tuned for this.
With the Chapter year and my first term as President coming to a close I wanted to say it
has been an exciting year. We have accomplished very much together. I am very much
looking forward to staying on next year and delivering more value to our Members. We
have a fantastic board, who work very hard and I am pleased to have the privilege of
working with them all.
As always we are looking for members to volunteer on our board. If you are interested
please feel free to reach out to me.
Cheers!
Anthony Jankowski

IIA Luncheons – May (upcoming) and April (past)
UPCOMING LUNCH - MAY
Data Loss is only half the story – Protecting Information is the missing piece
Breaches that involve the loss of sensitive data are constantly in the news. In an effort to avoid
becoming the headline, many companies focus on obtaining products that purport they will keep
organizations from losing valuable data, but too often fail to fully deliver on the promise. Buying a
product without fully understanding the importance of the solution to the organization’s information
protection strategy is putting the “cart before the horse”. Taking a strategic approach that links data
loss prevention to other important company and customer information protection initiatives will
ultimately be more effective in keeping your vital information assets safe and secure.
Our speaker:
Debra Banning, Experis, Global Director, Information Security, Center of Expertise
Debra has over 26 years of information and cyber security experience. Her deepest expertise lies in
information risk management, data protection, penetration testing and strategy development and
governance.
PAST LUNCH – April
The future looks...uncertain? The importance of understanding and managing emerging risk
The April IIA Luncheon event was held on Friday, April 20th at the Petroleum Club. It was a great
success, and lunch participations learnt from the experience of our speaker, Lisa Dorian.
WE GOT SOME FEEDBACK…
We have received some great feedback from students attending our lunch events. The following
is some feedback received from one of our lunch attendees in April:
“..It was great! I did get to meet a lot of great individuals in the industry, had a lot of my questions
answered about where to go and how to start and I would definitely recommend that other
students attend.
Thanks so much!”

IIA Calgary Chapter – EPAP Course - an Opportunity for IA to add value
Note to members: The ERCB’s Enhanced Production Audit Program (EPAP) introduces IIA standards
and audit best practice to regulatory compliance in the province of Alberta. This is a unique
opportunity for IA to demonstrate value, and assist others in the organization with any, or all, of the
following:
1. Identifying controls related to production measurement and reporting.
2. Testing controls
3. Assisting with reporting of data to the ERCB (note, EPAP requires a SOX-like Declaration to be
submitted to the ERCB each year, as to the state of controls over upstream measurement and
reporting).
Last Fall, the IIA Calgary Chapter offered a course introducing EPAP.
Please stay tuned for a follow-up EPAP course in the first half of 2012, which will focus on the following
topics:
Sustaining your EPAP program
Implementing and executing the EPAP controls remediation plan
Approaching compliance differently, and better, in EPAP Year 2
Addressing EPAP Compliance Assessment Indicators
Working with the EPAP System
Working with the ERCB Production Audit Team
The course will be delivered by Ali Hasnain, former Team Lead of Production Audit at the ERCB. The
Chapter will keep you posted on details as they become available.
Request to members: If you work in oil and gas, please make your internal production measurement
and/or reporting (accounting) staff aware about this course. EPAP directly impacts such staff, and they
will stand a lot to gain from a course such as this.

International Internal Audit Awareness Month
May is Internal Audit Awareness Month. This is a time to celebrate and promote the profession internally
to audit customers, executive management, and the board, as well as to various outside target
markets within their local business communities. We at the IIA Calgary Chapter encourage you, our
membership to promote the profession throughout your organization and the community.
We are all asked to showcase the value of the internal audit activity in a wide variety of ways
including, but not limited to:
Hosting special events such as luncheons or receptions to present local area business leaders with an
overview of the ways internal auditors support executive management in achieving organizational
goals and objectives.
Submitting a request for a proclamation from a local government official formally acknowledging
International Internal Audit Awareness Month.
Participating in a local post-secondary or university career night to promote internal auditing to
students who may be unaware of the various opportunities available within the profession.
We at the Calgary IIA will be doing our best to promote the profession, regardless of how we choose to
share the purpose and value of internal auditing within our great City of Calgary, the most important
message to take away is that building awareness takes time and consistent effort.

Chapter Member Honoured
Calgary Chapter Internal Auditor Receives Honours
Sonya Christina von Heyking CA•CIA, Calgary IIA member is one of 22 Alberta-based chartered
accountants being honoured with a 2012 Merit Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of
Alberta (ICAA) for making significant contributions to charitable and community causes, as well as to
the CA profession.
Sonya joined the University of Lethbridge as the Internal Auditor in 2006, after earning her CA
designation while with KPMG (Lethbridge). In 2009, Sonya went on to earn her CIA (Certified Internal
Auditor) designation, making her one of the few CAs in the province with that distinction. Early in her
position with the university, Sonya developed a project that partnered education with practical
experience, inviting groups of University of Lethbridge Assurance students to work in the Internal Audit
department for course credit. Sonya also volunteered as an ICAA Centennial Ambassador in 2010,
initiating a project that resulted in 13 continuing academic awards for local high school students,
funded by the donations of Lethbridge and area Chartered Accountants. In addition to her
professional work, Sonya has worked as an online facilitator and case evaluator for CASB, authored
exam questions for the Certified Internal Auditor certification exam, and presented at conferences for
the Institute of Internal Auditors in Canada.
I’d
like to extend a quick thanks to all who have contributed to this newsletter, which includes
the Board of Governors, as well as several IIA chapter members. Your contributions are valuable
in sharing our events, wins, challenges and paths ahead.

New! Chapter Sponsorship
The IIA Calgary chapter needs your assistance to promote a new initiative. The chapter is the sum of its
members, so in effect we need ‘us’ to help ‘us’.
The Calgary chapter exists to serve its members and promote the internal audit profession. Along with
individual members, the IIA community includes many companies. Often companies see value in
aligning with their local chapter. Companies that partner with their local chapter will be able to
publicize their commitment to the internal audit profession while actively supporting IIA members; both
within their company and their community.
As part of the Calgary chapter’s commitment to promote the profession, the chapter Board is
launching a new and revised sponsorship initiative. As board members, we are excited to take on the
responsibilities associated with coordinating sponsorship activities; however, to truly improve the
probability of success we need some help with the heavy lifting necessary to promote this new
initiative.
To help with the re-launch we need your support to raise awareness within your companies. Your
support may be realized through active initiative promotion within your company, passing this email on
to your CAE, and/or countless efforts in between.
Your support in this launch is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact Erin
Emerson at Erin.Emerson@huskyenergy.com
