Year 3 courses
BSMAN 3003 Strategic Human Resource Management
Human resource management has expanded as an area of business practice as the links between it, business
strategy and profitability have been recognised. This course builds on previous studies in the management of
human resources completed as part of the Bachelor of Applied Management. It will examine the concepts of
strategy and strategic management, and the manner in which a strategic approach to human resource
management can contribute to overall organisational strategy. Students will be encouraged to consider both
theoretical and practical perspectives in their evaluation of human resource policies and practices as
contributors to the long term performance of the organisation.

function of the entrepreneur in a range of organisations. Students will use the learning materials to develop an
understanding of the principles and foundations of entrepreneurship, the nature and role of entrepreneurial
function in a business/organisational context and to learn strategies and tactics that can be used to improve
the probability of new venture success. Students will learn the industrial, legal, financial and technical
formalities associated with the commencement of new ventures, and develop skills to understand the
application of entrepreneurship to a designated industry sector. Students will also learn to apply the principles
of entrepreneurship to judge the feasibility of a recognised opportunity, and choose appropriate methodologies
to formulate and present a business plan for a new venture.
BSMAN 3005 Project Management
This course provides students with the opportunity to apply Project Management knowledge and skills to
real organisational issues. Students engage in case study analysis and provide Project Management
solutions, manage the project selection process and engage in Project planning.
The course is aimed at middle level managers who may observe the project management process, and are
likely to have project managers reporting to them or possibly working with them. It is not the intent of this
course to create project managers but rather foster an understanding of the framework and procedures
and processes housed within it.
The course is based on the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Guide to the project management body
of knowledge (PMBOK guide). PMBOK is the sum of knowledge within the vocation of project
management. PMBOK includes proven traditional practices that are widely utilised, as well as
contemporary practices that are emerging in the profession. PMBOK stands as a guide for good practice in
the project management industry.
