Mission: At BlackGirlsCode our mission is to increase the number of young women of color in the field of digital and computer technology by providing them with skills in computer programming, exposing them to role models in the technology space, and increasing their self-confidence by teaching them the skills required to become tech creators and entrepreneurs. Organization Profile: BlackGirlsCode was founded in April 2011, by Kimberly Bryant as a vehicle for introducing girls of color from underrepresented communities to computer programming and technology. Pilot Program Overview: The BlackGirlsCode pilot program will provide participants an opportunity to explore basic programming concepts in a “hands on learning” and coaching environment. We will focus on allowing the participants to explore various technology concepts and encourage exploratory learning and discovery. Course instructors and TAs/mentors will be available to support student’s engagement in learning activities. The foundation of our class structure will be built around a team model which will pair girls into teams of 4-5 students who will work jointly on group projects throughout the cohort.
