 STDs
 Why is it that among well-educated reasonably affluent Americans, there is a high
rate of STDs?
 What is the role of education in preventing STDs?
 What are the barriers to STD prevention?
A lot of people believe that they will not be one of the people that will get STD’s. People are
more worried about pregnancy than they are about STD’s. People do not understand the seriousness of
STD’s and they think that the worst thing that can happen to them is pregnancy.
Another common thing among people is the desire for pleasure. Everyone is born with the desire
for sex. It is the only way our species can survive and it is necessary for the continuation for our species.
For some people and culture norms, sex is a common way to attain pleasure. In the moment, most
people are only thinking about the pleasure they are having, and they forget or choose to ignore the facts
of STD’s.
Another reason there is a high rate of STD’s is because of the social norms. People play around a
lot and then get married, and it is not uncommon for people to get divorces, so total, some people end up
having sex with lots of people, and that spreads STD’s. The rate of infidelity is rising as well, so people
are contracting even more and more STD’s.
Some people are also unaware that they have STD’s. They have not been tested, and do not think
it will happen. This is probably common, so they give the STD’s to many people without anyone
knowing.
Education of STD’s has the role of making people aware of the consequences, so that people will
abstain so as not to get STD’s. They want people to realize the serious problem before they decide to
have sex. This role is also just to help sway people’s opinions so that they do not have sex.
The barriers to STD’s is abstinence. That is the only full proof way for people not to get STD’s.
Other than that, you have a big chance to get one of these harmful diseases.
