Summer Reading
2015
As an honors English student, it is expected that upon entering the classroom you are an active
reader and are willing to demonstrate your reading proficiency very early in the first semester
and plan to further develop that proficiency throughout the year. It is our hope that beyond
helping you to sharpen your analytical reading and critical thinking skills, this summer reading
assignment will keep your mind active and challenged while encouraging a love for reading.
A. Required Text:
The Farming of Bones – Edwidge Danticat
B. Choose one of the following:
All But My Life: A Memoir - Gerda Weissmann Klein
Houskeeping - Marilynne Robinson
Newes from the Dead – Mary Hooper
The Once and Future King – T. H. White
Fahrenheit 451 - Raymond Bradbury
There Are No Children Here – Alex Kotlowitz
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - Mary Ann Schaffer
The Good Earth – Pearl S. Buck
C. There will be an assessment on your reading during the first week of school.
D. Notes Activities and Assessments:
As you read the texts, taking notes is recommended. You will be expected to know literary
elements such as plot, theme, character, conflict, setting mood, and any other
convention/idea that may be helpful for the essay test. In particular, analyze both the
required text and the student choice as to how the experiences of the protagonists teach them
important lessons. All of your notes should be thorough in order to prepare you for various
activities and assessments during the first weeks of school. You will need to have copies of
both texts available for your use.
