BROWN UNIVERSITY, PROVIDENCE, RI—Above were the final scores for the
2005 New England Regional Science Bowl. After a nine-hour day of competition, seven
schools from across New England went home with prizes—Nashua North for first place,
Philips Academy for second place, Commonweatlh School for third place, Newton North
for fourth place, Hopkinton for Wild Card, Cranston East for sportsmanship, and
Cranston West for spirit.
MVP prizes were also given to Patrick Jiang of Philips Academy B, Jenny Oberholtzer of
Commonwealth A, and Brenda Haggerty of Nashua North.
Nineteen teams from twelve high schools competed in all, each team surviving eight
rounds of intense science questions. Teams consisted of five students and a coach and the
competition followed a typical trivia game format--members buzzed in on a buzzer
system to answer science questions read by a moderator. The questions spanned all areas
of science, categorized into the subjects of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics,
Astronomy, and General Science. Students saw no mercy from the bombardment of
science questions—the questions required the teams to draw from knowledge of science
history, to apply concepts to different situations, to perform quick calculations, and to
know various facts from all branches of science.
The students were also treated to guest lectures from Brown faculty, including a talk from
Dr. Antal Jevicki on String Theory and a talk from Professor Emeritus Barrett Hazeltine
about how science and engineering can aid developing nations. The students were also
given an opportunity to speak to Brown undergraduates and professors to discuss the
issues surrounding science education in college.
The event was coordinated by three Brown University undergraduates: sophomore LickKong “LK” Tam, freshman Nong Li, and freshman Hiro Tanaka. The event was
sponsored by Foxboro/Invensys, Ibis Consulting, the Brown University Physics
Department, and the Brown University Engineering Department.
Each member of the winning team received a medal and a hundred dollars worth of
prizes. First place also received an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they
will compete at the National Science Bowl. Second place received medals and fifty
dollars of prizes for each member, third place thirty for each member, and fourth place
twenty. The prizes for the top four teams consisted of gift certificates to Amazon.com,
Best Buy, Borders, and the Gap. The winners of the Wildcard, Sportsmanship, and Spirit
awards were given subscriptions to a science magazine of their choice out of Scientific
American, Popular Mechanics, and Popular Science.
