Plymouth Regional High School 86 Old Ward Bridge Road Plymouth, New Hampshire 03264 (603) 536-1444 Fax (603) 536-3792 June 1, 2015 Dear Parents and Guardians: Before the school year comes to a close, I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to provide you with some information about 9 Honors English, the summer reading assignment, and how to contact me. My name is Georgie Boyd. Since 1994, I have been teaching middle and high school students English. During the last twenty years, I have enjoyed working with students of all abilities. For the 2015-2016 school year, I am teaching 9 Honors English, 9 English, and Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition, which is a senior English course. The 9 Honors English course your student has enrolled in is an advanced skills-based English course for self-motivated learners. This fast-paced, challenging course lays the foundation for those students who wish to take English at the honors and AP level in future years. Using works from different genres, students will learn various interpretive strategies and practice different ways of finding meaning through analytical reading, writing, viewing, and speaking. Students will study grammar--the organization and structure of language--to use it correctly in both writing and speaking, and they will enhance their vocabulary skills by learning and using vocabulary words derived from Greek roots as well as from their reading. This course will follow the curricular requirements of the Common Core State Standards. In addition to teacher-generated assessments, NWEA’s computerized adaptive tests will assess your student’s reading and language usage skills in the fall and the spring. Enclosed in this letter is the summer reading assignment. Your student, his/her current English teacher, your current administrator, and your future administrator have received these as well. If for some reason the assignment is misplaced, it does appear on our library website, my homework page, and hard copies are available in our guidance office. If after reviewing the materials you have questions, please contact me at gboyd@pemibaker.org or georgie@arc2arc.com. I will get back to you as promptly as my summer schedule permits. If at any time during the 2015-2016 school year you would like to know what is happening in the course, please visit our homework page at https://sites.google.com/site/mrsboydsclasses/home. In addition, PRHS offers on its homepage the student/parent portal to monitor academic progress. Please do not hesitate contacting me to set up a meeting to review your student’s academic progress. I welcome your questions and comments, and I am looking forward to a great school year! Sincerely yours, Mrs. Georgeann M.
