Summer Reading Project 2012
Grade 6
Students entering sixth grade will read two books over the summer and complete both Project I
and Project II. A rubric has been attached so students will know how they will be assessed. Both
parts of this project will be collected on the first day of school.
Part I
All students will read Crash by Jerry Spinelli and complete Project I.
Project I
Write a three-paragraph essay using the following format:
 Paragraph 1: a short summary of the novel
 Paragraph 2: what was the author’s purpose/theme?
 Paragraph 3: a personal reflection that includes your reaction to the
book, one personal connection to the novel, and your recommendation of the book

Part II
Choose one book from the following list:
The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan
City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
Project II
Create a poster of important events from the novel.
 On one poster, illustrate 4 important events from the novel. These key scenes should
depict important events from the story.
 Under each drawing, use your own words to describe what is going on in the picture and why
it is an important part of the story.
