The University of Mississippi ROTC Project GO Summer in Beijing Program Summer, 2012 CHIN 311 Intensive Chinese V (5 credits) & CHIN 312 Intensive Chinese VI (5 credits) Instructor: To Be Announced Class Time & Rooms: Days MTWThF Time 8:00 am -12:00 pm Room TBA Course Description: These courses are designed to help students who have studied at least two years of Chinese (or equivalent) to achieve greater proficiency in the oral and written use of the language through reading, listening, speaking and writing. More attention will be concentrated on developing the natural flow of spoken language, expanding vocabulary, and writing short essays in Chinese. The readings cover a variety of current topics related to political and social issues. The courses consist of two lectures and two drill classes every day (50 minutes each), plus an individual session (30 min.) with an instructor every afternoon. Lectures, drill classes and individual sessions aside, students are expected to spend three to six hours per day in private study. By the end of this program, those finishing the courses are expected to be able to produce fluent conversation, give a formal presentation, and write essays on complex social or historical topics in formal Chinese. Textbooks: *Textbooks—Visiting China: An Advanced Chinese Course by Columbia University. Course Requirement *Preparation Students are expected to prepare the materials for the designated lesson before coming to class. Preparation includes, but is not limited to, (1) reading the text and vocabulary list carefully until the meaning of each word is fully understood and the character recognized; (2) listening to the lesson, familiarizing oneself with the vocabulary and sentence patterns. Preparation is critical in these courses. Success largely depends on it. *Attendance and Performance Students are expected to attend every class and participate in the classroom activities actively. If you know that you will miss class, please contact the instructor ahead of time by email or phone to let the instructor know the reason for your absence. Frequent absences and tardiness without a proper reason will influence the instructors’ evaluation of your grade. Being late to class three times will be considered one absence. *Quizzes, Tests, Oral presentation ● Quizzes will be held at the beginning of class every day from Monday to Thursday. ● Tests will be given every week. There will also be one written midterm at the end of the fourth week and one written final examination at the end of the eighth week during this program. There will also be one oral midterm at the end of the fourth week and one oral final examination at the end of the eighth week during this program. *Homework The regular homework includes: ● answering questions by using the new vocabulary and patterns ● filling in blanks or completing sentences with proper vocabulary and patterns ● reading comprehension exercises and answering questions ● writing a composition based on the designated lesson. Please write your homework neatly, your composition every-other-line and turn in the assignment in the first class of the due date. Sloppily written homework or homework with too many errors may require a re-write. Re-written homework must be turned in the following day. Grades: Your grade in this course will be based on following: ● Attendance/Daily performance: 20% ● Homework assignments: 15% ● Oral presentations: 10% ● Quizzes: 10% ● Tests: 20% ● Midterm & Final oral exams: 10% ● Midterm & Final written exams: 15% Grading Scale: 90-100 80-89 70-79 60-69 Below 60 A B C D F Instructors’ Expectations of Students ● Attend each class on time ● Speak only Chinese during the program ● Turn assignments in on time ● Read all assigned readings before class ● Do not work on assignments after class has started ● Do not chew gum or eat food in class (drinking a beverage is OK) ● Turn off all noise-making communication devices such as cell phones and MP3’s. Note: Homework must be submitted in the first class on the due date. Homework submitted late will be corrected but will receive no credit. There will be no make-up quizzes or tests, except in extraordinary circumstances beyond the student’s control.
