Language Institute, Thammasat University EL 395 Academic English 2 Course Outline Semester 1/2015 Pre-requisite: EL 295 Academic English 1 Course Description This is a learner-centered course designed to enhance academic skills for students specializing in mathematics, statistics and computer science. Students are encouraged to practice all four language skills, namely: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The course mainly focuses on reading, writing, vocabulary development, and study skills. In addition, students are required to use academic skills in their projects and class assignments. One mark will be deducted for each late coming and 2 marks for each absence. Class Assignments (15 points - 5 points each) To achieve academic skills, students are required to complete the following assignments at an acceptable quality. Substandard assignments will be rejected for revision and improvement. This will guarantee to pass the minimum requirement. It is also a part of preparation for the completion of the project. 1. A paraphrase about the climate in a place 2. A paragraph explaining human body 3. Precise descriptions of graphics (graphs, charts and tables) Note: Some of the topics may be changed or there can be additional topics. Project (15 points) A major project is required during the course. Details of the project are described below: Project Members: Groups of 3-4 Project Description: The project is report of a survey on a selected topic which has a significant impact in the students’ field of the study. The content must be based on the original source in the students’ own words. Discussion and correct reference must be included. Oral presentation is also required. Quizzes (20 points) – 10 points each There will be two tests, one before the midterm exam and the other prior the final exam. They have fix plans as shown in tentative schedule.
