Job Description Job Title: Gallery Invigilator-Explainers Wage: £8.82 hr Fixed Term Contract Sept-Dec 2011-06-10 Reports to nominated venue staff member The British Art Show 7 (BAS7) is a Hayward touring show of the very best of Contemporary British Art. The exhibition, which showcases the biggest and best of current British contemporary art, will be on display from 17 September to 4 December 2011 across five venues including Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Peninsula Arts Gallery, Plymouth Arts Centre, The Royal William Yard and The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art. Plymouth is one of only three locations outside London selected by the Hayward Gallery to host this prestigious exhibition, supported by Plymouth City Council and Arts Council England. The main purpose of the Gallery Invigilators-Explainers is to be responsible for the safety of the public and protection of artworks during the duration of The British Art Show (16 Sept-4 Dec 2011). You may be required to work across multiple gallery locations in Plymouth. Applicants must be able to commit to working a minimum of 8 hours per week over the 3-month period (Sept – Dec 2011) and be able to attend a short induction/training programme week commencing 12th September. Main Duties: To be responsible for welcoming visitors into the Gallery, handling queries, monitoring the space, and handing out gallery exhibition guides, provide basic information about artwork and information about the other venues hosting BAS7. Dealing with general customer queries, complaints and feedback as they arise, resolving the issues and following up as necessary providing the customer with a positive experience. Act as an interface between the artwork on display in the exhibition venues and visitors to BAS7. To keep a record of visitor attendance and capture evaluative information from visitors. Manage the setting up and shutting down of the exhibition, including turning on/off video work, replenishing exhibition guides etc. Monitor the gallery to ensure that the artwork on display is safe and secure at all times. Maintain a tidy and well-presented gallery Manage visitor’s use of the space (including prohibiting drinking, eating, photographing artwork etc) To assist with maintaining the very high standards of customer service and appearance required in the Gallery areas. To assist where reasonably possible, with any possible access related issues to the exhibitions and services. To attend relevant meetings and training as required. Any other duties as required. Security, safety and legal: To maintain security throughout the building, including assisting closing the building at the end of the evening and ensuring the building is safely cleared and checked in order that building is empty of visitors and staff. Compliance with Health and Safety legislation, ensuring all emergency and evacuation procedures, training records and venue checking procedures are adhered to. To be aware of and work in line with all risk assessments. To act in accordance with the following: Data Protection Act, Health and Safety at Work Act, Disability Discrimination Act. Person Specification: Highly motivated and passionate about contemporary visual arts An enthusiastic and friendly attitude and willingness to help is essential. Previous experience in invigilation/ gallery work, gallery interpretation is desirable. Reliable and confident. Ability to take charge of the public in an emergency. First Aid training would be desirable. Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety requirements, insurance policy and building procedures. Well-presented, positive and versatile with excellent spoken communication skills. Attention to detail and accuracy. Commitment and willingness in working unsocial hours, including regular weekends, evenings and bank holidays. Flexible attitude and proactive approach to work. Ability to work unsupervised and to own initiative. Customer service experience would be desirable. A Standard CRB check may be required to work within certain venues.
