Walk On: Gallery Explainers Role Profile The main purpose of a Gallery Explainer is to engage with visitors to help them enjoy and understand exhibitions and displays and to help ensure visitors and exhibits are kept safe and secure. Main Duties: Welcoming visitors into the Gallery To assist with maintaining high standards of customer service and appearance in the exhibition venues Provide information about artworks and artists in the exhibition Handing out Gallery Exhibition Guides and making sure they are restocked at the end of your shift Talk to visitors about the exhibition and provide an interesting and enjoyable experience To research and learn about artworks and artists in the exhibition Handling queries: Dealing with general customer queries, complaints and feedback as they arise, helping to resolve issues and following up as appropriate, or necessary, to provide the customer with a positive experience. Knowing which member of staff to report to should queries relating to the Gallery arise. Monitoring the space: Help maintain a tidy and well-presented gallery Help to manage visitor’s use of the space (including prohibiting drinking, eating, photography, safety of artworks etc) Assisting Gallery staff as appropriate and as requested Keeping a diary of communication for staff at your venue to use, with questions, problems and comments from each shift. This will provide the venues with important visitor feedback, and your own personal insights. General aspects: Promoting and applying policies and regulations on health and safety, security, child & vulnerable adult safeguarding, equality & diversity, Emergency and Evacuation procedures etc as appropriate to each venue. To assist where reasonably possible, with any possible access related issues to the exhibition and services. Skills, Knowledge and Competencies: Confident at talking to and engaging with a wide variety of people Good eye for detail The ability to respond to general enquires An interest in engaging with and promoting contemporary art and culture Some understanding of basic health and safety issues in a public building is desirable The ability to move freely around an exhibition, stand/sit for periods of time and work alone for periods of time on occasions Diligence – security conscious and aware of visitor’s behaviour that might pose a risk to both exhibits and the public’s health and safety NMT 13/05/2014
