Assessment information for Year 2 parents SATs All children’s attainment is recorded and sent off to form National statistics at the end of KS1 (Y2) and at the end of KS2 (Y6). At the end of Y6 children are given a series of tests in English, Maths and Science. This forms the statistics used for National comparisons. At the end of Year 2 schools are obliged to report the levels they have assessed the children at in Maths, Science, Reading, Speaking and Listening and Writing. Science and Speaking and Listening is recorded as a straight level – L1, L2 or L3. The national expectation is that children at the end of Y2 will be working within L2. Maths, Reading and Writing is recorded with sub levels – L1c,1b, 1a, 2c, 2b,2a, L3. The national expectation is that children will be working at 2b. From 2012 children in Y1 will complete a phonics/reading screener. This will be completed by a known adult and parents will be informed of how well their child is doing and how they can support their child. Children will be asked to read about 20 words – some real words, some made up words. The purpose of this test is to test the children’s phonic and word building knowledge. Assessment at KS1 Children are assessed and tracked during their whole time at Lyndhurst. From YR to Y3. This continuous and ongoing assessment forms the levels we report nationally at the end of Year 2 and then at the end of Y3 to the child’s next school. This also helps us to identify clearly those children needing specific extra support – we call this ‘intervention’. Lyndhurst is also committed to National intervention teaching strategies (Y2) such as Reading Recovery, Every Child Counts and Fischer Family Trust Reading. These groups are led by highly trained staff based on sound educational research. As part of this assessment we are obliged to complete a series of tests and tasks with your child (commonly referred to as SATs). We complete these as part of our ongoing class work and in an informal manner. Because they are just part of our ongoing assessment the children are placed under no pressure from school and probably will be unaware that they have completed them. We do not report these ‘scores’ separately as they are just a ‘snap shot’ in time but they can be useful evidence as an example of independent work. As such they contribute towards our ongoing assessments. Our assessment procedures and levels are moderated (checked) by other teachers and independent moderators. We also externally moderate collections of work with our cluster schools.
