Key Stage 1 SATs
Measuring Success
• Children are assessed in reading, writing,
speaking and listening, mathematics and
science.
• The emphasis is on teacher judgement;
• The children can be assessed throughout
the year;
• The tests are used to inform final teacher
judgements. They are just one piece of
evidence. There are no tests for Science.

Useful websites
• There is a lot of confusion and
misinformation on the web- very difficult
for parents.
• Example English papers:

Levels
The teachers assess each child’s attainment every term using levels.
This shows their progress. It also gives an indication of their
achievement against national standards, level 2b being considered
“average” for the end of year 2.
It is the progress that is the important measure.

How can you be sure we
are levelling correctly?
• For all subjects we work from the National
Curriculum Levels.
• We are provided with level descriptors to
work from.
• We are closely monitored by the L.E.A.
• We level throughout the school and
practise together.
• Ms Ward used to be a KS1 SATs
moderator for Hertfordshire.
Reporting
• We report our final teacher assessments to the
L.E.A.
• We report these teacher assessment levels to
parents/ carers.
• Parents/ carers are also told the results for all
the children in their child's age group in the
school and the national results for the previous
year
• The papers are analysed and all data passed on to
the year 3 teacher
What can you do a home?
• Continue with reading and asking questions about
the story.
• Encourage the children to read ‘unseen’ texts.
• Make number problems a part of every day life.
• Try some interesting website activities e.g. :
