Fetal Heart Monitoring Course

Program Goal:
The Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring Course is designed for registered nurses who have
successfully completed the Intermediate Course, a comparable fetal heart monitoring
workshop and/or are certified in fetal heart monitoring.
In order to facilitate successful completion of the Advanced Course, participants are expected
to review the newly released Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices, 4th Edition
textbook. All participants will be responsible for obtaining their own copy of the Fetal
Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices, 4th Edition textbook. Limited copies of this
textbook are available for check-out at the Avera McKennan Library or by purchase from
Kendall/Hunt Publishers by calling 1-800-338-8290. The course ID number is required when
ordering through Kendall/Hunt AVEA100101. The textbook is $25.00 plus shipping &
handling. In addition to reviewing the textbook, participants are expected to download and
complete the course pre-work packet, which can be found on the registration site page.
Upon completion of this activity you will be able to:
1. Identify basic physiologic principles underlying fetal heart monitoring.
2. Describe advanced physiologic principles of maternal and fetal oxygen transfer and
acid-base balance.
3. Describe advanced concepts in antenatal testing including analysis and interpretation of
biophysical profiles and complex antenatal fetal heart monitoring tracings.
4. Identify physiologic principles, goals and interventions for patients undergoing antenatal
testing.
5. Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for patients undergoing antenatal testing.
6. Compare and contrast physiologic principles and causes of adult cardiac dysrhythmias
with fetal cardiac dysrhythmias.
7. Analyze fetal cardiac dysrhythmia patterns and describe out comes associated with
these patterns.
8. Analyze complex fetal heart monitoring patterns including uterine rupture, maternal-fetal
hemorrhage and abruption, utilizing NICHD FHM nomenclature/definitions.
9. Apply perinatal risk management principles, communication techniques and
documentation strategies related to complex and challenging patient care scenarios.

Cancellations:
Payment is required by Monday, March 28, 2011. Participants not paying in advance will not
be guaranteed placement and materials for the program.
Cancellations received after Monday, March 28, 2011, are refundable minus a $15 registration
service charge. Substitute participants may be made at any time.
Please note that if you do not cancel and do not attend, you are still responsible for payment.
For Avera McKennan employees who pre-register, who do not cancel by Monday, March 28,
2011 or who do not attend, they will be charged a $15 registration service charge.
Continuing Education:
AWHONN is accredited as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses
Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
AWHONN also holds California and Alabama BRN numbers: California CNE provider #CEP580 and
Alabama #ABNNP0058.
Accredited status does not imply endorsement by AWHONN or ANC of any commercial
products displayed or discussed in conjunction with an activity.
Successful completion of written examinations and performance of skills evaluations are requirements
for completing the program and earning continuing education credit. Participants who attend the full
workshop and successfully pass the skills and written tests earn 12.0 contact hours of continuing
nursing education credit or 10.0 CMEs. No partial credit is awarded.
