Advanced AWHONN Fetal Heart Monitoring Course Tuesday, November 15, 2011 7:45 am – 5:45 pm Avera McKennan Education Center – Classroom 1 Pre-registration required by Tuesday, October 25, 2011 Program Goal: The Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring Course is designed for registered nurses who have successfully completed the Intermediate Course, a comparable fetal heart monitoring workshop and/or are certified in fetal heart monitoring. In order to facilitate successful completion of the Advanced Course, participants are expected to review the newly released Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles and Practices, 4th Edition textbook. All participants will be responsible for obtaining their own copy of the Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices, 4th Edition textbook. Limited copies of this textbook are available for check-out at the Avera McKennan Library or by purchase from Kendall/Hunt Publishers by calling 1-800-338-8290. The course ID number is required when ordering through Kendall/Hunt AVEA100102. The textbook is $25.00 plus shipping & handling. In addition to reviewing the textbook, participants are expected to download and complete the course pre-work packet, which can be found on the registration site page. Upon completion of this activity you will be able to: 1. Identify basic physiologic principles underlying fetal heart monitoring. 2. Describe advanced physiologic principles of maternal and fetal oxygen transfer and acid-base balance. 3. Describe advanced concepts in antenatal testing including analysis and interpretation of biophysical profiles and complex antenatal fetal heart monitoring tracings. 4. Identify physiologic principles, goals and interventions for patients undergoing antenatal testing. 5. Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for patients undergoing antenatal testing. 6. Compare and contrast physiologic principles and causes of adult cardiac dysrhythmias with fetal cardiac dysrhythmias. 7. Analyze fetal cardiac dysrhythmia patterns and describe out comes associated with these patterns. 8. Analyze complex fetal heart monitoring patterns including uterine rupture, maternal-fetal hemorrhage and abruption, utilizing NICHD FHM nomenclature/definitions. 9. Apply perinatal risk management principles, communication techniques and documentation strategies related to complex and challenging patient care scenarios.
