Chemistry Instructor: Mike Lewis Book: Chemistry by Zumdahl Attendance: Is a necessity to keep up with the information being taught. If you miss YOU need to check with ME to see what needs to be made up. Tardies: Will be given to any student who is not seated and reading/working on chemistry when the bell rings. Necessities: Notebook w/loose leaf paper, pencils, a scientific calculator*, and an open mind to new concepts. *If you buy a good calculator now it should last you through college! This will be considered a college preparatory class and will be treated much like a college class. The student will be expected to bring all necessary supplies to class, turn all assignments in on time (the student will not be hounded for assignments i.e. don’t turn it in don’t get a grade), and act in a responsible manner in all classroom situations. The class will be based on lecture/discussion, notes, and laboratory experiences. Assignments: Will consist of all problems and questions within the chapter reviews as assigned, article reviews, and laboratory experiments. Note: All assignments must be completed in pencil, neatly. If they are not they will not be graded until they are, with possible loss of credit. Exception to this is the article reviews may be in ink. Tests: Will consist of all concepts discussed in notes and lectures covering the chapter of study. They will consist of matching, true and false, problems, and short answer/essay questions to check true understanding of concepts. Laboratory Experiences: All lab write-ups will be due at the next class meeting. Failure to act appropriately (i.e. horsing around, splashing, spraying and etc.) will result in a loss of laboratory privileges for the year and as a result the loss of all laboratory points which account for 25% of your cumulative grade. Laboratory grades will be determined upon agreement with lab partner’s results, productivity in the lab room, cleanliness of lab station when done, and completeness of laboratory write-up. Breakage of laboratory equipment will be dealt with as it occurs and could result in buying new equipment or if determined to be a result of “horse play” see above. Grades: will be assigned in the following manner: General assignments 50% Labs 25% Tests 25% The grade scale will be according to district policy. Extra Credit will not be given. If you need to discuss any problems that arise, my planning period is 2nd period, please come see me towards the end of this period. If this will not work for you, you may come in before school or directly after school. If it is after school hours and you need to reach me, please call me at home before 10:00 pm. My number is 577-2430.
