Chemistry 40S Course Outline Instructor: Ms. Falconer Website: http://msfalconer.pbworks.com Email: sbator@stmarysacademy.mb.ca Extra Help: by appointment OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. The science of matter is also addressed by physics, but while physics takes a more general and fundamental approach, chemistry is more specialized, being concerned with the composition, behavior, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. Chemistry 40S is a course designed to help students continue to develop an understanding of the basic principles and concepts of science, develop critical thinking and problem solving abilities, develop the skills and an understanding of the processes of science, attain the level of scientific awareness essential for all citizens in a scientifically literate society, make informed decisions about further studies and careers in science, develop a positive attitude towards science and to develop an understanding and appreciation of the effect technology has on advancements in science and the resulting effects on society. TEXTBOOK Chemistry: Matter and Change COURSE EVALUATION BREAKDOWN Term Work o Tests and Quizzes o Labs o Projects, Homework and Assignments Mid-year Assessment Final Exam TOTAL 30% 20% 5% 15% 30% 100% TOPIC OUTLINE Unit 1 – Chemical Equilibrium Unit 2 – Kinetics Unit 3 – Electrochemistry Unit 4 – Acids & Bases Unit 5 – Atomic Structure TERM WORK 55% of the course grade has been assigned to term work. Completion of labs, homework, projects, and assignments is the responsibility of the STUDENT. Students are expected to have all of their work completed neatly and on time. You are given ample time to prepare for your tests and are therefore expected to write them on the day assigned. If however, you are absent from a test you are expected to write it on the FIRST day you return to school. It is YOUR responsibility to see me as soon as you arrive at school to schedule the time that you will be writing your test. Your lab reports will be due 1 week from the date you complete the lab, whether you have class that day or not. All lab reports are to be completed on an individual basis, and therefore should all be unique…DO NOT COPY… Assignments must be handed in on the due date. Assignments received after other students’ assignments are handed back will receive a mark of 0, unless the assignment is completed in front of the teacher during the student’s lunch or spare. I am always available for extra help. Do not wait until you are in trouble to seek help. FINAL EXAM The final exam will take place at the end of the year. It will be a cumulative exam, meaning that everything is examinable from day one to the last day. Exam schedules will be posted as soon as possible. LABORATORY SAFETY No food or drink allowed in the classroom (water is the only exception). All students are required to wear safety goggles during lab activities to protect eyes from harmful chemicals and in case of glassware breakage. Continued and persistent removal of safety goggles while conducting labs may result in a deduction from the lab report. Wear your goggles!!! EXTRA HELP Students are encouraged to come in for extra help and/or to complete assignments that were not completed in class. Extra help will be available at lunch and as requested by students. Please don’t hesitate to come and see me if you are having any difficulty. REQUIRED MATERIALS Students will require the following items: Binder with loose leaf paper Scientific calculator Graph paper Pens, pencils, erasers
