Exercise 1: Underline the verb or verb phrase in each sentence. Then identify the voice of the verb by
writing A for Active or P for Passive in the blank.

Exercise 2: Put parentheses around the prepositional phrases in each sentence: Write Adj. or Adv.
above each phrase to tell whether it is functioning as an adjective or an adverb phrase. Then write the
word each phrase modifies beside the Adj. or Adv. label. In the blank tell what question it answers:
which one or what kind as and adjective would, or if it tells how, when, where, or why as an adverb
would. The first one has been done for you.

Exercise 3: Underline each participle and gerund once and each verb twice, and write P, G, or V
above each one. Remember that participles look like verbs but are used as adjectives and gerunds
look like –ing verbs but are used as nouns.
1. Dad planted the wheat.
2. Planting is Dad's job.
3. The planted wheat grows after a big rain.
4. Planting is done in the spring.
5. Blowing leaves tumbled across the yard.
6. The leaves were blowing across the yard.
7. The fallen leaves were a sign of autumn.
8. The leaves were removed by raking.
9. My uncle yelled loudly at the ball game.
10. The crowd supported the team by yelling.
11. The yelling crowd supported the team.
12. Yelling was encouraged by the cheerleaders.

Exercise 4: Write I above the infinitive (to + verb) in each sentence. Then underline each infinitive
and label the function of each in the sentence. Remember infinitives can function as nouns, adjectives,
or adverbs. The first one is done for you.
