Dear Parents/Guardians,
My name is Mrs. Drexler and I am your students Integrated Coordinated
Science Teacher. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for intrusting me
with your child’s education. I will do my best to encourage and motivate your
child to succeed in class.
My Educational background includes six years teaching experience in
private schools prior to working at San Pedro High School and the last three years
at San Pedro High School teaching Biology and Integrated Science. My degree is
in Geography minor in Biology.
TEXT: Integrated Coordinated Science for the 21st Century, It’s about time,
Herff Jones Education Division Lost or replacement of book $63.00
The Course Objectives:
An introduction to Physical Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Ecology.
In the first Semester, an introduction into Earth Science covering Biogeochemical
Cycles, California Geology, and Dynamic Earth Processes. The second unit
covers Physics that includes Heat and Thermodynamics, Wave Characteristics
and Properties, Electric and Magnetic Phenomena. In Semester 2 a basic
introduction into Chemistry that include Atomic and Molecular structure,
Chemical bonds, Acids and Bases, and Chemical Thermodynamics. Biology and
Ecology will conclude the remaining concepts of Evolution and the four
processes of the Earth cycles. All four components of Integrated Coordinated
Science contain multiple opportunities for Investigation and Experimentation in
addition to critical thinking and problems solving skills. Grades are based on
completion of individual as well as group assignments.
Students are required to have a composition book 9 ¾ in. 7 ½ in. 100 sheet.
The composition books are available at 99-cent store, Target, Office Depot and
other local supply stores. Laboratory exercises, demonstrations, videotapes and
other media presentations used to supplement the basic curriculum. Integrated
Science is a hands-on inquiry based program that encourages students explores
four different aspects of science.
Specific Skills reinforced through vocabulary development, critical thinking
skills, reasoning skills (logic), writing skills, proper use of lab materials and
apparatus.
Grading Formula:
A= 100-90%,
B= 89-79%,
C= 78=67%,
D= 66-56%
F= Below 56%
Grading Criteria: Academic performance and participation is critical to passing
the class. Completion of class assignments, laboratory work, homework, tests,
quizzes, projects, science composition book and class participation, are factored
in the total points possible. Extra credit through extra credit articles from Internet
source, Television, current Business Magazines and current Newspaper articles
given on an ongoing basis. Late work accepted with cleared absences. Point
value will only count for 50%. Makeup examinations and quizzes with cleared
absences to be given the next day at teachers’ time preference.
1. Tests and Quizzes =40%
2. Notes = 15%
3. Classroom Assignments (Lab) = 20%
4. Homework = 15%
5. Participation= 10%
CLASSROOM RULES:
1. Students must come to class prepared and remain in the class the entire class
period.
2. Hall passes are severely limited due to students not returning to class. Student
ID held until student returns to class.
3. THERE IS A ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY ON GRAFITTI IN THE
CLASSROOM. If caught, be prepared for a parent, teacher conference and
possible suspension.
4. All San Pedro High School rules strictly enforced. Los Angeles Unified School
District has a strict policy regarding all electronic media. DO NOT USE OR
BRING CD players, I-Pod’s, Cell phones, M-P3 Players, PDA or Laptop
computers as they will be confiscated and can only be returned to parents.
SCIENCE NOTEBOOK: Composition Book 9 ¾ in. 7 ½ in. 100 sheets
Periodic examination of books conducted throughout the school year. Points
given based on completion of assignments and notes
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is mandatory for success in this class. Much of the
work in class is group work not individual work therefore, unable to make up
these assignments.
The SPHS attendance/tardy policy strictly enforced. Excessive tardiness (3 or
more) will result in call home, parent conference or referral to administration
office.
A tardy mark applied if students are not in their seat and ready to work
when the period bell rings.
BRING TO CLASS DAILY: Pens, colored pencils, pencil, eraser, 8 ½ x 11notebook papers, and Science composition book and poster board for laboratory
assignments.
CLASSWORK: I prefer to have black/ blue ink for notes and assignments.
Typed work is encouraged. Work turned in with black or blue ink or typed will
receive extra credit. If work cannot be clearly read by the teacher, it will receive a
zero for points. Work will receive a zero for papers ripped out of notebooks, have
doodles, tears, stains, or are otherwise illegible.
Proper heading a MUST at all times.
Work answered in complete sentences and steps shown on work that have
