Novel Unit Requirements: The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman English 11: College Prep/Basic English For this novel unit, you will complete the following assignments: Vocabulary Study 1. Using the attached Vocab List: a. Write the definition of the word. b. Locate 2 synonyms and 1 antonym for each word. c. Write 2 paragraphs using all words on list. You may write in the form of a d. letter, a very short story, a news article, even a poem. YOUR CHOICE Active Reading Charts 1. On the worksheet charts provided, you will complete various charts. Follow the directions on each chart. Each blank and/or line must be complete to receive full credit. a. Chain of Events Chart b. Character Motive/point c. Characteristics/events Books 1 and 2 Book 3 Book 4 Character Study1. Character Map: You will choose 1 major character from the novel and complete a Character Map. 2. You will write a 2-3 paragraph Character Sketch based on the person. Responding to the Novel 1. You will be responsible for answering—incomplete sentence—questions relating to the novel. Your will receive handouts with these questions. Writing Assignment— 1. Students will write a short story (Historical Fiction) based on a character dealing with life in the deep South following Reconstruction. 2. Students will complete a short essay that explains how the novel is a Realist piece of literature. Use class notes. ***** Separate assignment sheets with detailed instructions and grading information will be given for both writing assignments. Quizzes will be given after class discussion of each book in the novel. Writing assignments will be due in middle and end of novel. You must complete the requirements for each section. Your work should be neat, legible, and show effort; don’t give me a “rush-job.”
