To analyze Unit 1 QUESTIONS of the TIMES
-What makes a true HERO?
-Who really shapes SOCIETY?
-Does FATE control our lives?
-Can people live up to high IDEALS? and to research multiple modes and genres of composition that support the answer to the thematic question with your own interpretation of those pieces.
Part ONE : Choose ONE question from above that interests you most. Dissect first your BIG
QUESTION. Deconstruct the question, mull it over, think of real world examples that are current.
Then, find three examples:
NOVEL -from the GOLD LIST—something we have not covered in class or in previous years or that is a film; annotating WHILE you are reading your novel is paramount to your success.
Short Piece – essay or article (if your novel is NF, choose a short work of Fiction; if your novel is
Fiction, choose a short piece that is NF)
Multi-media podcast, YouTube video, newscast clip, etc. of pieces that effectively answer your BIG QUESTION. Obviously you have to read and analyze your pieces to show HOW they answer your BIG QUESTION!
Part TWO : Write a 3-5 page paper analyzing (using all pieces) how each piece answers your BIG
QUESTION, ensuring you tie all pieces together.
Target timeline for reading your novel:
First half—September 12 (with annotation)
Last half— September 21 ( with annotation)
Short piece—September 25 (annotated bib)
Multi-media piece—September 28 (annotated bib)
*the above pieces will each count 25% of a Quiz grade

• Part One (quiz grade): Think of this as prewriting/brainstorming/planning; I want to see evidence of your analysis prior to writing.
• Part Two (composition grade): Your composition will be graded using the attached rubric; you must cite (MLA) adequately to support your thesis all three pieces to ensure the best grade. I am looking for in-depth analysis of the novel as well as a seamless comparison/use of the other two sources. Significant grammar errors (run-ons, comma splices, fragments, and misused words) will result in significant point deductions—PROOFREAD your work!
