Code: FLSA Designation: Pay Grade: Bargaining Unit: 741G NE 8 Maint./Svc. ________________________ Date of Last Revision: ______ BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY: Functions as a working crew leader and performs skilled work in the preparation, painting and plastering of interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, structures, fixtures and furniture; assists the Paint Shop Superintendent in overseeing painting and related activities. TYPICAL JOB DUTIES: Functions as a working crew leader over Painters, Sign Painters, Plasterers and other classified, temporary or student employees engaged in painting activities and assists the Paint Shop Superintendent in supervising the Paint Shop. Trains and instructs employees on proper work procedures and policies. Assists in communicating and enforcing policies and procedures; resolving problems; addressing employee concerns and complaints. Assigns and monitors work activities. Coordinates the scheduling and supervises the painting of University facilities. Coordinates work flow and schedule to ensure deadlines are met, priorities are recognized and policies and procedures are followed. May participate in the interviewing and selection of job applicants (voluntary basis); may recommend personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination, promotion, discipline, layoff/recall). Inspects buildings, structures, fixtures and furniture to determine need for repair. Uses roller, brush and spraying equipment to apply paint, stain, and varnish to walls, ceilings, equipment, furniture, exterior surfaces, signs, parking lots, etc.; mixes and matches paint; applies wall coverings to walls. Performs glazing and plastering duties. Prepares estimates and gathers necessary materials required to complete a job. Cleans and maintains equipment and work area. Performs miscellaneous Paint Shop duties (e.g., stencil letters). Drives vehicle to pick up and deliver personnel and materials. Paint Shop Crew Leader -- page 2 Assists in monitoring inventory; initiates paperwork to purchase materials, supplies and equipment. Performs designated functions of Paint Shop Superintendent in his/her absence. Performs related duties as required. REPORTS TO: Paint Superintendent, Structures Superintendent or other designated supervisor WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to dust, dirt, fumes, chemicals, heights, variable temperatures and weather conditions and potentially dangerous equipment (e.g., airless sprayer, sand blaster); requires considerable physical exertion to include regular climbing of ladders and scaffolding, extended periods of standing or assuming awkward positions, frequent lifting of up to 75 pounds (e.g., scaffolding) and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds (e.g., sand bags); may be required to work varied hours to include occasional weekends; requires on-campus travel. QUALIFICATIONS: Required Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; painting apprenticeship preferred. A minimum of four years’ skilled painting experience. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1. Ability to train and provide effective work direction to other employees 2. Ability to manage time effectively and set priorities. 3. Ability to carry out or assist in implementing changes. 4. Skill in interpersonal communication to effectively interact with university personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to gather information about jobs, to schedule work to be done, to transmit work directives, etc.) 5. Skill in painting. 6. Knowledge of painting, preparation procedures. 7. Knowledge of and skill in use of painting tools and equipment (e.g., roller brush, spraying equipment, etc.). 8. Knowledge of plaster and wallpaper procedures. 9. Ability to identify problems and determine appropriate action. 10. Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures. 11. Ability to demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 100 pounds. 12. Ability to perform basic mathematics and math associated with trade applications (e.g., algebra, trigonometry). 13. Ability to read and comprehend a variety of written material (e.g., manuals). 14. Skill in written communication (e.g., to complete forms, to compose memos). 15. Ability to work in high places.
