CLASS TITLE:

Paint Shop Superintendent

Pay Grade: 41

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

Plans and oversees painting and related activities; supervises staff assigned to the Paint Shop.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES:

Plans and manages an on-going painting program for the University.

Supervises Paint Shop Supervisor, Painters, Plasterers, Sign Painters, and other classified, temporary or student employees engaged in painting and related activities in the Paint Shop; has authority and responsibility to exercise independent judgment in:

Planning and directing the work activities of employees; assigning and monitoring work duties and responsibilities; establishing and modifying work methods, schedules, and priorities.

Interviewing job applicants and conducting performance evaluations of classified employees.

Recommending formal personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination, promotion, discipline, layoff/recall) for assigned employees and initiating appropriate action to implement recommendations.

Communicating and enforcing policies and procedures; resolving problems; addressing employee concerns and complaints and adjusting grievances.

Monitoring and maintaining records of employees' work hours, overtime/compensatory time, sick leave, vacation, performance, and related information; authorizing time worked and recommending the approval/disapproval of leave requests.

Ensuring appropriate training of staff; identifying training needs; developing and implementing training activities.

Interprets blueprints for area estimation; confers with architects and building curator to determine needs (e.g., color scheme, paint type, etc.).

Inspects progress and completed jobs.

Recommends staffing needs.

Maintains records on all projects (e.g., requisitions, materials and equipment used, personnel, time to completion).

Initiates paperwork for the purchases of paint, supplies, and equipment; monitors inventory and costs.

Performs related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposed to dust, dirt, fumes, heights, variable weather conditions, and potentially dangerous equipment (e.g., sand blaster); requires light physical effort (e.g., stooping, bending, walking, lifting) to check work progress, demonstrate painting techniques, etc., and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds (e.g., sand bags, pressure washer); may occasionally climb scaffolding; requires on-campus travel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; painting apprenticeship preferred. A minimum of five years skilled painting experience, to include two years supervisory experience.
