Syllabus Juniors Course Book School year: 2011/12 Teacher: Mrs. Patrícia Jurašková Block :A,B,C,D Group: 3A/B Group C Description: Course Book is a specialized English course with a primary goal that is aimed at developing all four language skills - speaking, writing, reading and listening on the B2.2 and C1.1 level of the Common European Framework. Objectives: Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics Ability to understand and participate in specialized discussions Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options Extend and practice grammatical structures to prepare students for international tests like FCE (First Certificate in English), CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) which are on B2.2 and C1.1 level according to Common European Framework of Reference. Standards: development of communication and presentation skills information-processing skills, reading comprehension and listening comprehension skills improvement and practice of writing skills reasoning and evaluation skills – self-criticism and constructive criticism, ability to evaluate opinions for and against Skills: After completing this course students should know how to correctly and adequately react to various situations. They should be able interact and maintain a sufficient speech flow in everyday as well as in future career conversations and dialogues. Students are capable in engaging in discussions on different topics and also can produce coherent individual oral speeches. Furthermore, they are qualified to write extensive and coherent pieces of written work on diverse topics by using their own personal experience. Students know how to state and defend their own opinions and ideas. They know how to efectively use more complex lexical, grammatical, syntactic and stylistic structures in formal and informal written form. Students also improve skills which they need to succeed in exercises typical in FCE and CAE exams. Assessment: The idea behind assessment is to reveal the strengths and weaknesses in a student's use and understanding of English. In accordance with school policy, the following categories will be used. Course Book is assessed as part of English. Non-academic/Classwork 20% Participation, punctuality and readiness. Inclass assignments. Homework 20% Homework assignments, research. Quizzes 25% 4-5 quizzes/block Tests 35% 2 tests/block Policy for Written Assignments - typed - turned in on the day it is due- it should be handed in to the teacher during the lesson. Teacher marks the work that has (not) been turned in as NO and YES into the Nonacademic/Classwork category. - If students cannot turn in their work at the lesson it is due (they are not at school due to their illness etc.), they have to send their work to their teacher’s school email account on that day of the deadline or write an email specifying why you are not in school and why you are not able to send the assignment. The email must be confirmed by the teacher that it has been received, otherwise the work is NOT considered as accepted. Resources and materials needed: 1. FCE Course book (U5-12), Longman, 2008 2. Destination B2 Grammar and Vocabulary, MacMillan, 2005 3. CAE Gold Plus Coursebook (U1-5) and Maximiser, 2008 4. English Dictionary 5. extra materials Requirements: attendance and participation in class well-prepared and timely work on your oral presentation handing in homework on time and bringing required study material to class a notebook for homework and new vocabulary binder for handouts and copied materials a separate folder to file all writing work (essays,letters etc.) Projects: Each block students will create and present a project that will be graded as a test. The projects will be specified according to topic, if it will be an oral or written presentation. There will be one common English rubric for speaking and writing assignments, projects, presentations etc. Office Hours: My office hours are on Wednesday, 2-3pm in Room 33. You can come and see me with any questions or problems. It is also possible to set a specific time and date if necessary, in person or via email. Conditions related to my absence When I miss one or more classes for various reasons, it is my responsibility to call, email, write a text message etc. and contact my classmate and ask about the topic(s) covered during the class(es) of my absence. Once I am back at school (within 3 days), I will see my teacher and ask her how and when I should catch up with all the assignments missed (quizzes, tests, homework, etc.). If you do not fulfill this criteria the homework, quiz or test will be graded as 0.
