Our Nursery Class provides an excellent foundation for learning. Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Jones and Miss Jones will ensure that your child gains a wide and varied range of experiences during the time spent with them. This booklet is intended to provide you with the relevant information regarding the organisation of the Nursery provision at the school. Your role as parent is crucial in these formative years, and with your help and co-operation, your child can achieve the maximum benefits of Foundation Phase education. Best wishes Elaine Griffiths Acting Headteacher Your first day in Nursery will be _____________________ Come at_______________ Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Jones and Miss Jones will welcome you Nursery Times Morning Session : 8.50am – 11.20am Afternoon Session: 12.50pm - 3.20pm At the end of each session, your child will be brought out to you. An adult MUST collect every child in the Nursery. If a friend or neighbour is collecting your child, please inform the teacher so that we can ensure the safety of your child. Should there be a Court Order restricting Parental Access/Responsibility the school must be in receipt of official confirmation. Dress Many items of uniform can be purchased from Mrs. Scandrett’s shop in Station Road. Please write your child’s name on all items of clothing. Because of the nature of play in the Nursery “best clothes” are not recommended. Please try to make sure that the clothes are manageable– jeans and dungarees can be difficult for young children. Please encourage your child to do up buttons, zips and fasteners and to put on their own coats and shoes. The wearing of jewellery is discouraged with the exception of “stud” earrings and watches. Activities In the Nursery a different topic for example “Ourselves”, “Our Homes”, “Light” etc is covered each term. Work in the Early Years is based on guidelines provided by the National Assembly in their “Foundation Phase Learning Framework, which covers; Language, Literacy and Communication Mathematical Development Knowledge and Understanding of the World Physical Development Personal and Social Development Creative Development Bilingualism A range of activities and experiences will be offered to the children during the course of the topics. Home Corner This is an area where pleasurable and educational experiences are enjoyed. The corner changes to suit the topic – it could be a hospital, train, café or shop etc. A collection of clothes for dressing up provides the children with innumerable opportunities to pretend to be different characters. Art and Craft The children will be offered many opportunities to use paints, pastels, inks and crayons. Printing, cutting, collage work and model making will be offered. Plasticine, dough or new clay are also experimented with each week. The children will be allowed to bring their work home. Play with Natural Materials There are opportunities for the children to play with a variety of natural materials e.g. water, dry and wet sand, leaves twigs. These activities are structured for educational development. A nature table is in the classroom and children are encouraged to bring in any objects they find interesting. Construction Play Numerous activities such as jigsaws, Lego, Mobilo, K’nex, building blocks, beads, multilink cubes and are provided Library A good selection of books is on display. These include storybooks, nursery rhyme books, information books, many of which reflect the topic being covered. We encourage the children to bring in their own books from home to read in school. All books will be returned. Children are also allowed to take home books from school. These can be changed on Fridays. Book bags can be purchased from Mrs. Scandrett, Station Road. The school also has a large number of Story Sacks, which can be used by parents at home. Outdoor Play The outdoors is used for many learning experiences and there are a variety of learning zones used by the children. Some of these zones help to develop gross motor skills; a climbing frame, slides, adventure trail bikes, carts, scooters etc help enrich outdoor play. We encourage the children to make use of these facilities daily and we provide wet weather clothing during inclement weather. The children also participate in P.E. (physical education) sessions, which take place on Thursdays. We request the children wear tracksuits/shorts, tee shirts and trainers. These sessions will include movement, gymnastics and games. Bilingualism Welsh will be gradually introduced in the Nursery in the form of greetings, prayers etc. Here are a few of the words and phrases, which we use: Bore da - good morning Prynhawn da - good afternoon Eisteddwch - sit down Sefwch - stand Gwrandewch - listen Dewch yma - come here Diolch - thank you da iawn - very good Penblydd hapus - happy birthday Pwy wyt ti? - who are you? Dw I’n hoffi - I like Un-1 Dau-2 Tri-3 Pedwar-4 Pump-5 Coch – red glas – blue melyn – yellow gwrdd – green Preparing your child for school Give your child practice in doing simple jobs and following instructions so that they build up confidence and become more independent: Encourage them to put away play materials. Encourage them to flush the toilet wash their hands. after use and always Encourage them to use a handkerchief. Read to your child, tell them stories, poems and nursery rhymes and encourage them to look at picture books. Play games such as I Spy using the sounds of letters and not names. Encourage your child to talk about activities they have been doing in nursery and visits they have been on. Provide pencils, crayons, paper and paints whenever possible. When writing your child’s name, please only use a capital letter at the beginning, eg James. We use a particular style of writing in school (see sheet at the back of this booklet). If by any chance your child brings home a piece of nursery equipment, don’t worry – please encourage them to return it. We do understand. Snacks Fruit can be purchased in school or your child may bring a healthy snack to school. Milk will be provided free of charge each day.
