I’d like to welcome both you and your child to Creunant Primary School.
Our Nursery Class provides an excellent foundation for learning. Mrs.
Harris, Mrs. Jones and Miss Jones will ensure that your child gains a wide
and varied range of experiences during the time spent with them.
This booklet is intended to provide you with the relevant information
regarding the organisation of the Nursery provision at the school. Your
role as parent is crucial in these formative years, and with your help and
co-operation, your child can achieve the maximum benefits of Foundation
Phase education.
I am confident that your child will thoroughly enjoy his/her time in the
Nursery Class and should you have any queries at all, please do not
hesitate to contact Mrs Harris, Mrs. Jones or me, we are always pleased
to be of help.
Best wishes
Elaine Griffiths

Nursery Times
Morning Session : 8.50am – 11.20am
Afternoon Session: 12.50pm - 3.20pm
At the end of each session, your child will be brought out to you.
An adult MUST collect every child in the Nursery. If a friend or
neighbour is collecting your child, please inform the teacher so that we
can ensure the safety of your child. Should there be a Court Order
restricting Parental Access/Responsibility the school must be in receipt
of official confirmation.
Dress
Many items of uniform can be purchased from Mrs. Scandrett’s shop in
Station Road. Please write your child’s name on all items of clothing.
Because of the nature of play in the Nursery “best clothes” are not
recommended.
Please try to make sure that the clothes are manageable– jeans and
dungarees can be difficult for young children. Please encourage your child
to do up buttons, zips and fasteners and to put on their own coats and
shoes. The wearing of jewellery is discouraged with the exception of
“stud” earrings and watches.
Activities
In the Nursery a different topic for example “Ourselves”, “Our Homes”,
“Light” etc is covered each term. Work in the Early Years is based on
guidelines provided by the National Assembly in their “Foundation Phase
Learning Framework, which covers;
Language, Literacy and Communication
Mathematical Development
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
Physical Development
Personal and Social Development
Creative Development
Bilingualism
A range of activities and experiences will be offered to the children
during the course of the topics.
Home Corner
This is an area where pleasurable and educational experiences are
enjoyed. The corner changes to suit the topic – it could be a hospital,
train, café or shop etc.
A collection of clothes for dressing up provides the children with
innumerable opportunities to pretend to be different characters.
Art and Craft
The children will be offered many opportunities to use paints, pastels,
inks and crayons. Printing, cutting, collage work and model making will be
offered. Plasticine, dough or new clay are also experimented with each
week. The children will be allowed to bring their work home.
Play with Natural Materials
There are opportunities for the children to play with a variety of natural
materials e.g. water, dry and wet sand, leaves twigs. These activities are
structured for educational development. A nature table is in the
classroom and children are encouraged to bring in any objects they find
interesting.
Construction Play
Numerous activities such as jigsaws, Lego, Mobilo, K’nex, building blocks,
beads, multilink cubes and are provided
Library
A good selection of books is on display. These include storybooks, nursery
rhyme books, information books, many of which reflect the topic being
covered. We encourage the children to bring in their own books from
home to read in school. All books will be returned.
Children are also allowed to take home books from school. These can be
changed on Fridays. Book bags can be purchased from Mrs. Scandrett,
Station Road. The school also has a large number of Story Sacks, which
can be used by parents at home.
Outdoor Play
The outdoors is used for many learning experiences and there are a
variety of learning zones used by the children. Some of these zones help
to develop gross motor skills; a climbing frame, slides, adventure trail
bikes, carts, scooters etc help enrich outdoor play. We encourage the
children to make use of these facilities daily and we provide wet weather
clothing during inclement weather.
The children also participate in P.E. (physical education) sessions, which
take place on Thursdays. We request the children wear
tracksuits/shorts, tee shirts and trainers. These sessions will include
movement, gymnastics and games.

Preparing your child for school
Give your child practice in doing simple jobs and following instructions so
that they build up confidence and become more independent:
Encourage them to put away play materials.
Encourage them to flush the toilet
wash their hands.
after
use
and
always
Encourage them to use a handkerchief.
Read to your child, tell them stories, poems and nursery rhymes and
encourage them to look at picture books.
Play games such as I Spy using the sounds of letters and not names.
Encourage your child to talk about activities they have been doing in
nursery and visits they have been on.
Provide pencils, crayons, paper and paints whenever possible.
When writing your child’s name, please only use a capital letter at the
beginning, eg James. We use a particular style of writing in school (see
sheet at the back of this booklet).
If by any chance your child brings home a piece of nursery equipment,
don’t worry – please encourage them to return it. We do understand.
Snacks
Fruit can be purchased in school or your child may bring a healthy snack
to school. Milk will be provided free of charge each day.
