Libraries, Archives, Museums and Popular Culture Area of Southwest/Texas Popular Culture Association & Southwest/Texas American Culture Association 2007 Conference Proposal Leisure reading, listening, viewing and playing: Popular books, audio books, videos and videogames in academic libraries by Jessica E. Moyer and Christy Donaldson This workshop will start out with a literature review and four case studies of popular materials collections in academic libraries. The literature review will provide an overview of the state of popular leisure materials in academic libraries including current practices, methods for obtaining popular materials, and a discussion of the popularity and differing viewpoints of such collections by students and faculty. The four case studies will be from two medium-sized public college libraries that have recently or are getting ready to add such collections, one large public university library that has recently added a multimedia popular materials collection after budget cuts forced the close of the separate Browsing Room which consisted of books only, and a small community college that added a popular books collection. We will also present the preliminary results of a survey on preferred digital audio players and formats for audio books from a mediumsized public university library. We hope to encourage a lively discussion of the role of leisure materials in academic libraries, types of materials academic libraries should acquire and how they should go about acquiring, processing, displaying/advertising and circulating such collections.
