Job Description Job title: Department/School: Grade: Location: Instrumentation Technician Mechanical Engineering 6 Claverton Down Campus Job purpose This is a full time fixed term post until 30/10/2016 to support experimental work on the Ford/Advanced Propulsion Centre funded ACTIVE project within the Powertrain and Vehicle Research Centre. The role will entail: - Mechanical and electrical design and installation of instrumentation and control systems - Setup of data logging hard- and software - Calibration of instrumentation - Fault Finding on measurement and control systems - Assisting in the analysis of data - Assisting in the writing of technical publications - Managing purchasing stocking and maintenance of highly specialised instrumentation suites Source and nature of management provided Line Manager: Dr S Akehurst Co-supervision: Dr R Burke, Dr C Copeland, Prof C Brace Staff management responsibility Liaison with technicians Special conditions None Main duties and responsibilities Responsible to the PI/CIs of the project 1 Research Support: Provide experimental/technical support for the specification, design, installation, calibration and maintenance of instrumentation and control suites. Assist in the planning/running of experiments and the analysis of data. 2 Technical Support: Keep up to date with new technologies for Page 1 sensing and control applications that support research 3 Teamwork Work with technicians, PhD students and research fellows within the Powertrain and vehicle research centre and across the department of Mechanical engineering. 4 Liaison: informally on a day to day basis with technicians and academic staff and industrial partners as required 5 Planning and organising Plan and schedule own tasks. Help to prioritise use of facilities and resources 6 Analysis and Research: Assist in the analysis of research data and the managing efficient data storage for future use. 7 Work environement: Responsible for continuous awareness of health and safety and clean and efficient workspaces ensuring high standards are maintained within the work environment 8 Team Development: No specific duties 9 Dissemination: Assist in the preparation of: research papers (journal and conference) and reports to industrial partners You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager. Page 2 Person Specification Criteria Essential Desirable Assessed by A/F Qualifications HNC, C&G or BTEC National Certificate / Diploma in an engineering subject. Degree in electrical engineering or mechatronics Experience/Knowledge Knowledge in the specification, design and manufacture of electrical/mechanical control and instrumentation suites Knowledge of Automotive sensor technologies Experience in using dSpace and/or Matlab/Simulink Previous experience of working in an electronics manufacturing or research and development workshop.
