DUTY STATEMENT: HEW5 Technical Officer - Instrumentation
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical and workshop assistance for both the
student and technical staff activities in the Instrumentation Workshop.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Technical

Assist with the manufacture and maintenance of a wide range of electrical/electronic
equipment and research apparatus for use in undergraduate and research laboratories and
applications from either verbal or written instructions;

Fabrication of various items of electrical/electronic and electro-mechanical equipment,
including component and material procurement, circuit construction/modification and system
integration;

Assist other staff (academic, research or general) or students by providing instrumentation
support to academic endeavours;

Assist with the calibration and administration of test and measurement equipment and
component stock within the Instrumentation Workshop, and

Participate in the regular maintenance and improvement of workshop facilities, with
particular focus on modernisation and occupational health and safety.
Occupational Health and Safety

Conduct workshop inductions for new staff, students and visitors;

Perform Risk Assessments on activities undertaken to fulfil the role in accordance with the
University’s Risk Management System (see the University’s website at
http://www.uq.edu.au/ohs/index.html?page=29960), and

Comply with requirements of Queensland occupational health and safety (OH&S) legislation
and related OH&S responsibilities and procedures developed by the University or Faculty
Unit.
Other

Comply with the University’s Code of Conduct (see the University’s web site at
http://www.uq.edu.au/staff/employment);

Adopt sustainable practices in all work activities and comply with associated legislation and
related sustainability responsibilities and procedures developed by the University (see the
University’s web site at http://www.uq.edu.au/sustainability/responsibilities, and

Other duties consistent with the above as directed from time to time by supervisor.
Reporting Relationships
The position reports to the Instrumentation Support Group Supervisor.
