DUTY STATEMENT: HEW7 Principal Technical Officer - Instrumentation
Primary Purpose of Position
The position’s role is to manage all technical & resource aspects of assigned instrumentation projects,
ensure efficient & effective instrumentation services to academics, researchers & students in the
Faculty & provide specialised technical expertise, such as design input, as required by clients.
Duties
Duties & responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Supervisory







Supervision of technical project staff including assisting with appointment, attendance, safety,
productivity, etc;
Coordination of sub-contract & third party project stakeholders;
Organising staff & equipment to deal with “emergency” requests & breakdowns;
Provide management with budgetary & progress information from all assigned projects;
Ensure record keeping is adequate to meet legislation, policy & cost recovery needs;
Advise staff & students on correct & acceptable work procedures & practices, &
Deputise for Instrumentation Support Group Manager in their absence.
Technical

Supply technical & design support/leadership & training to subordinate staff;

Develop detailed specifications of client requirements & quote for & implement system
engineering solutions using structured project management techniques;

Ensure all design & development projects undertaken meet the specified objectives for their
use in research & development & undergraduate education;

Selection & recommendation of equipment & materials for purchase;

Assist with programming maintenance & upgrades of workshop equipment & facilities;

Maintain awareness of technological developments, specialist computerised equipment &
software in the area of electronic design & instrumentation with a view to ensuring the
technical advancement of system solutions for academic & research outcomes within UQ.
Occupational Health & Safety:

Ensure workshop inductions are performed for all new staff, students & visitors;

Perform Risk Assessments on activities undertaken to fulfil the role in accordance with the
University’s Risk Management System (see the University’s website at
http://www.uq.edu.au/ohs/index.html?page=29960);

Ensure application of appropriate risk control measures;

Comply with requirements of Queensland occupational health & safety (OH&S) legislation &
related OH&S responsibilities & procedures developed by the University or Faculty Unit;

Assist management with the implementation of suitable procedures to ensure safety of
personnel throughout duration of development projects & for subsequent system users;

Ensure use of appropriate safety systems & personal protective equipment, &

Comply with safe working procedures & Environmental policy/legislation.
Other


Adopt sustainable practices in all work activities & comply with associated legislation &
related sustainability responsibilities & procedures developed by the University (see the
University’s web site at http://www.uq.edu.au/sustainability/responsibilities, &

Other duties consistent with the above as directed from time to time by supervisor.

The position reports to the Deputy Manager, Faculty Workshop Group.
