CITIZENS THEATRE LTD. GENERAL INFORMATION The Citizens Theatre founded in 1943 is Scotland’s premiere producing theatre. It produces a range of work in the Main Theatre, Circle & Stalls studios; tours nationally and internationally and has a pioneering and innovative year-round Citizens Learning and TAG programme that is unequalled in Scottish theatre. The Theatre generates a range of its own productions annually, offers a diversity of programming for different audiences and has an enviable track record of discovering new talent. In the last three years the Theatre has been nominated for 36 awards. The company’s reputation continues to grow with recent shows such as A Clockwork Orange, Beauty and the Beast, The Monster in the Hall, and Marilyn. TAG regular events like kids @ citz, Nightschool and Dayschool as well as projects such as pioneering work in Greenock and Barlinnie prison. In May, we tour Museum of Dreams where it will headline at the Singapore Arts Festival, and After the End our Trainee Director project plays the Circle Studio, during August we are taking The Monster in the Hall to the Traverse Theatre. In 2010/11 our audiences and participants in the full range of our work exceeded 80,000 people. The Citizens Theatre is synonymous with its home in the Gorbals, a diverse area of Glasgow which has been transformed in recent years but still faces significant social and economic challenges. The location of the Theatre is one part of what makes the Citizens unique. In March the board announced the appointment of Dominic Hill as Artistic Director. He will take up his new post in October. The Theatre’s plans for the future are ambitious, and include a new look at the main house programme, an ensemble of actors, a closer integration of the work on stage and the work of Citizens Learning and TAG. We aim to produce some of the finest shows in Scotland at our Glasgow home, tour nationally and internationally in addition to our unique programme of participatory work. Longer term there are plans to develop the Citizens Theatre site, providing much needed catering facilities and community spaces, in order to make it an increasingly important and influential hub for the region, a haven for audiences, and an inspirational and creative home for artists and participants. 1 The Theatres There are three theatres within the building: 1 Main auditorium - seating 450 people on two levels. This is a Victorian theatre built in 1878 with beautiful plasterwork. The larger productions and the Christmas Shows are performed in the main auditorium. 2 Circle Studio – an `in the round’ theatre (seats on four sides of the acting area) seating 100 people. 3 Stalls Studio – a small transverse theatre (seats at each end of the stage) seating 50 people. The Current Pattern of Activity Currently the annual pattern of activity is: Sept to March The Citizens produce a minimum of 4 productions a year of which at least one tours in Scotland. The Citizens Community Company and the Young Company also perform work during the year. There is also an innovative and extensive year-round programme of work in the community and education sectors, in Glasgow and across Scotland. We also work in partnership with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. April to June As well as our own work we host the best touring companies from across the UK, encourage the work of talented young Scottish companies in the studios, and work with the Music Theatre course at Knightswood Secondary School and other drama colleges in Glasgow to produce work at the theatre. August Maintenance/ Rehearsals Spring Programme 2011 A hard copy of the spring brochure will be available on request or further information can be seen on the website www.citz.co.uk 2 Staffing The Theatre currently operates with a small permanent staff of 26 people, including all Heads of Departments both Front of House and Back Stage and. A full creative and technical team is employed during the Citizens Theatre Ltd. performing seasons, when the staff numbers may rise to 100 people at its peak, dependent on the scale and range of productions. All props, costumes and scenery are made in the Theatre’s workshops. Grants & income: 2011/12 The Citizens Theatre Ltd. currently receives grants for its annual programme of work from Creative Scotland and Glasgow City Council. The Creative Scotland grant is £1,111,000 and the Glasgow City Council grant is £400,000. The Theatre has to work within tight budgets and has for over 30 years never incurred a deficit at the end of the financial year. Application and Interview Timetable Applications: The deadline for applications is 12 Noon on 27th May 2011 Short Listing: This will take place in the week beginning Tuesday 31st May 2011, and candidates short listed for auditions will be contacted by the Company Stage Manager. Auditions: Auditions will take place at the theatre in Glasgow and in London mid June 2011. Times to be confirmed for both Glasgow and London. Please note that there will be call back interviews for successful candidates towards the end of June beginning July 2011 at the theatre in Glasgow. At these interviews candidates will be expected to discuss their ideas to develop a solo piece for presentation in one of the studios during the 12 months of the internship Start Date: To be agreed with the successful candidate. 3
