CITIZENS THEATRE LTD.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Citizens Theatre founded in 1943 is Scotland’s premiere producing
theatre. It produces a range of work in the Main Theatre, Circle & Stalls
studios; tours nationally and internationally and has a pioneering and
innovative year-round Citizens Learning and TAG programme that is
unequalled in Scottish theatre. The Theatre generates a range of its own
productions annually, offers a diversity of programming for different audiences
and has an enviable track record of discovering new talent. In the last three
years the Theatre has been nominated for 36 awards.
The company’s reputation continues to grow with recent shows such as A
Clockwork Orange, Beauty and the Beast, The Monster in the Hall, and
Marilyn. TAG regular events like kids @ citz, Nightschool and Dayschool as
well as projects such as pioneering work in Greenock and Barlinnie prison.
In May, we tour Museum of Dreams where it will headline at the Singapore
Arts Festival, and After the End our Trainee Director project plays the Circle
Studio, during August we are taking The Monster in the Hall to the Traverse
Theatre. In 2010/11 our audiences and participants in the full range of our
work exceeded 80,000 people.
The Citizens Theatre is synonymous with its home in the Gorbals, a diverse
area of Glasgow which has been transformed in recent years but still faces
significant social and economic challenges. The location of the Theatre is one
part of what makes the Citizens unique.
In March the board announced the appointment of Dominic Hill as Artistic
Director. He will take up his new post in October.
The Theatre’s plans for the future are ambitious, and include a new look at
the main house programme, an ensemble of actors, a closer integration of the
work on stage and the work of Citizens Learning and TAG. We aim to
produce some of the finest shows in Scotland at our Glasgow home, tour
nationally and internationally in addition to our unique programme of
participatory work.
Longer term there are plans to develop the Citizens Theatre site, providing
much needed catering facilities and community spaces, in order to make it an
increasingly important and influential hub for the region, a haven for
audiences, and an inspirational and creative home for artists and participants.
