Wyborne Newsletter Wyborne newsletter – keeping you in touch with your school community Issue 96 Autumn news Harvest Festival For our harvest festival this year we focused on the hardships suffered in third world countries. Many thanks to all the parents, children and staff who contributed to the assemblies. The children thoroughly enjoyed performing the music prepared by Ken Wood, our music specialist. As a result of your generosity we were able to distribute a number of food parcels to local residents and collected approximately £68.00 to send to the Calcutta Relief Service which supports the resourcing and building of schools. This will be the focus of our fundraising this school year. Families learn best together Once again we were able to offer a range of activities to families who were invited into school to share lesson time with their children. The activities on offer were TaeKwondo, Art, Drama and Football. Both parents and children very much enjoy being able to share in learning a new skill. This can have a very positive impact on how parents and children learn together at home. If you have not returned your questionnaire to the school yet, please send it in after half-term. Walk to school Our Walking Bus continues to grow. Since the beginning of the new term our numbers have increased to 40. The bus meets weekly on a Wednesday, outside the Co-op at 8.35am, leaving promptly at 8.45am. So come along with your children and join our bus. The class of the month trophy (for September) was awarded to 2N with 96.3% of the class walking every Wednesday. October has been International Walk to school month and in celebration of this we held a BIG WALKING BUS on Wednesday 21 October. 79 Pupils, 13 staff and 32 parents joined the bus to acknowledge International Walk to School month. October 2009 Once again, our thanks to all pupils, parents and carers who continue to support the School Travel Plan. Travelling Book Fair The Travelling Book Club comes to Wyborne again after half-term. Please make sure your child brings their “Supersaver Stamps” on the day, or they can bring cash if they wish in a named envelope. Children who have saved £10.00 in stamps can spend £11.00. Children will be given a slot to browse for books and spend their money. The fair will remain open until 4.00pm on Tuesday. Parents & Friends A very warm welcome to Carol Bushell (chair) Nicole Woodman (vice-chair) and Nadine Bennett (Treasurer) who were elected at the recent Parent & Friends Annual meeting. We are also very grateful to Bridgitte Laws for continuing in the role of secretary. We wish the new team success in all their activities and hope other parents and friends will volunteer to help them. Their first request is for help with auditing their financial accounts. This has to be done by a qualified accountant so if you hold such a qualification, or know someone who would be willing to help P&F on a voluntary basis, please contact Nadine Bennett via the school office. We also wish to pass on our enormous thanks to Liz Kinniment and Chris Laws, who have stepped down as Chair and Treasurer of P&F, and who have worked tirelessly on behalf of the school for a number of years. School Journey year 6 The school journey meeting for parents will be held on Wednesday 4 November at 6.00pm in the lower hall. This is an informative evening and is for parents only. The balance of payment for School Journey must be made by Friday 23 October. If you are not able to meet this deadline, office staff are happy to discuss payment arrangements. Key Stage II SATs These are the Standard Attainment Tests by the government. The dates for the current Year 6 are May 10 – 14th. It is very important that all children 2 Wyborne Newsletter attend during this school week. No holiday taken during this time will be authorised by the school. Christmas arrangements Our Key Stage 1 Nativity play will take place on Tuesday 8 December at 11.00am. There will be just one performance of the KS1 play which parents are invited to. Nursery and Reception classes will prepare a separate performance on Tuesday 8 December at 2.00pm to which parents are also invited. The Carol Service is to be held at All Saints’ Church, Bercta Road, New Eltham at 1.45 on 11 December. 21st century telecommunication A new telephone system is being installed at school during the half term holiday. Parents will find that, on ringing the school, they will be presented with a number of options. (We know how annoying these can be so we have kept the options to a minimum). The main option for parents is the ability to record a child’s absence by selecting the appropriate option and leaving a simple message. We hope this will save parents time in the morning, when it can be difficult to get through to the school if lines are busy. Ocean Maths Thank you to all the parents in years 4, 5 and 6 who joined their children for the Ocean Maths workshops. If there are any children who have not yet bought their maths pack, these will be available after half-term at a cost of £2.00. More Ocean Maths workshops are planned for the Spring term. Dinner money Dinner money for next half term is £49 (35 days) or £7.00 per week. Please make sure you pay dinner money in advance by sending in a named envelope with your child. Cheques are payable to Greenwich Council. Winter’s on its way Please make your child brings a coat to school and that all uniform is clearly named. Lip salve and cough sweets must not be brought into school. Vaseline and tissues are available from first aiders.
