Bovingdon & Flaunden Tennis Club www.bovingdontennisclub.co.uk September Newsletter We hope you have had a relaxing summer holiday. For those of you who have been away recently, the Club has achieved Clubmark accreditation, a huge thank you to Nick and Tim for their tireless efforts in achieving this benchmark. Whilst there will be no obvious changes in the way we operate, it does change our status within the LTA as we are no eligible for funding towards floodlighting once the planning hurdles are overcome. The 2010 AGM is fast approaching, as last year we plan to hold this at the Football Club, giving us more space as well as access to the bar. Please come along as it’s your opportunity to influence the way the Club operates, tell us what you think and listen to what the committee plan for the 2011 season. The formal documentation will be out from Diana in late September but the date of our AGM is the 18th October @ 7.30pm. A review of our various Watford & District teams in the 2010 season shows another year of success with our Mens A, Ladies A and Ladies B all being promoted. Well done to all involved. Both Mixed captains have found it hard to get regular support from players and as a result this is an area we need to build on next year. This year we joined in with a number of other local Clubs in playing friendly C Team matches in Mens, Ladies and Mixed. The intention is not to win but expose non team players to a different form of the game and to give them a taste of matches. Next year we plan to increase the number of games. This year we held our first non league team players American Tournament, it was very well supported and hotly disputed. The eventual winners were Paul Vettraino and Deb Bettis, well done to everyone that participated and particular thanks go to Steve Cook for organising. This now looks like an annual event! Following the feedback from of the June Tennis Event and Open day the Club has purchased a Ball machine. Anyone wishing to borrow the machine and appropriate balls should contact Gordon – Gordon.bettis@btinternet.com to organise, a small charge of £5.00 will be made for each hiring. The results from the Club competitions on the 12th September will be communicated in the next newsletter. Over the winter months we have once again entered teams in the Men’s over 45 and over 55 leagues. These matches are played at weekends and Peter Oppenheimer will be in contact with eligible Men in the next few weeks. With the nights drawing in Wednesday evening social tennis is now from 5.00pm to dusk Saturday afternoons 2.00pm – 5.00pm, and to replace the ever diminishing Wednesdays it would be good if we could get a Sunday morning session going from 11.00am to 1.00pm, once a regular group commit , Sunday’s will self perpetuate. Junior & Adult Coaching The next courses are starting from Saturday 11th September and we will take this opportunity to move children into new groups (red to orange etc), parents will be notified by Nick, but in the meantime timings will continue as current: 09.00 am - 5/8 (red group – Beginners, Intermediate and Performance) 10.00 am - 8/9 (orange groups – Intermediate and Performance) 11.00 am - 10+ (green and yellow groups) In addition to our Saturday morning junior activities we are continuing our very successful Rusty Racket initiative at 9.00am. The majority of our new members have derived from these sessions and it’s great to see what a success they have become.
