Albany Cycling Club – Bridges Handicap A smaller than normal field contested the Albany Cycling Club’s Bridges Handicap race on Saturday afternoon in fine and mild conditions. Run around the rolling hills of the Kalgan region, this race of 56 kilometres traverses 4 of the King and Kalgan River bridges before returning town via Chesterpass Road and a finish near the Albany Business Centre. Newcomer to road racing Josh Dunjey led home the 13 minute pack to a fine win in a time of 1 hour 54 minutes and 1 second, ahead of Mike Harvey and Bill Hansen, with Geoff Cass, the surviving member of the 8 minute pack, fourth. Earlier in the race a large group from the 21 and 18 minute packs, lead by Nav Coole and Matt Bascombe, had formed to chase down the front runners but they were unable to succeed and finished almost 2 and half minutes back. Coole finished fifth with the fastest time of the day of 1.35.25 with Bascombe right on his wheel. Other strong rides came from Paul O’Donnell, in one of his first races with the club, old timers Jim Lie and Vic Gladish and also Mark Mazur. First lady home was Lucy Wellstead, continuing her solid form of recent weeks with Allison Wiggins and Bronwyn Alley a little further adrift. Bianca and Danica Wiggins enjoyed themselves through the hills in riding the short course option that is on offer for all races. Next weeks racing moves to the Clydesdale Estate, where the club will trial a new criterium circuit away from the bustle of city traffic. Racing starts at 2pm.
