15. Aims
This course aims to develop in students an understanding of destination as a physical, geographic and culturally symbolic resource requiring an integrated approach to
sustainable management. It aims to give an understanding of the nature of tourism destinations and their planning, management and development. It
will explore the underlying factors leading to the development and promotion of places (urban, coastal and rural) as tourist destinations and also
examine the exploitation of different destination environments as a tourism resource.
16. Syllabus
The syllabus will draw upon the following subjects
 Introduction of destination types- developing and developed economies, urban and rural zones
 Theoretical approaches to the destination as product e.g. Gunn, Mathieson & Wall, Jansen-Verbeke, Fainstein & Judd
 Destination lifecycle analysis and its impact on strategic approaches to resource management
 Regeneration and economic contributions of tourism and the impact on residents (e.g. Doxey’s irridex)
 Destination profiling, branding and positioning- cultural, heritage, special interest, coastal, purpose built, resort cities, landscapes and event led etc
 Inter organisational approaches to destination management, stakeholder alliances and public private sector approaches.

