Research Officer: Immunology
(3-year contract)

The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the University of Cape Town is seeking to appoint a full-time
research officer to support the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) program on “Immunology of
Infectious Diseases in Africa”. The successful applicant will be based within the division of Immunology,
department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) at the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine
(IDM) and will report directly to the SARChI Chair, Professor Frank Brombacher.
Requirements:



A PhD qualification in Immunology or Science related field.
Must have 3 to 5 years post-doctoral experience in immunology and disease models (e.g. tuberculosis,
leishmaniasis, schistomiasis, and allergic asthma) and evidence of contribution to international peer-reviewed
publications.
Skills and experience in bioinformatics, molecular techniques and mouse immunology will be advantageous.
Responsibilities:
The main aim of the position is to support the SARChI Director with his research functions.

Research & Management
o Provide direct support to the SARChI Director’s research activities
o Be responsible for defined research programs within SARChI
o Support the director in the development and implementation of innovative research projects within the
SARChI programme.
o Independently supervise mentor and train post-graduate students and post doctoral researchers.
o Undertake grant writing and fundraising for research projects.
o Publish in international peer-reviewed journals.
o Establish and maintain national and international research collaborations.
o Present and communicate research at national and international conferences and meetings.

Administration
o Be responsible for a number of managerial activities on the SARChI program (e.g. ethics, operational,
equipment platforms, mouse breeding and molecular management).
o Supervise post-graduate students.
o Technical training of both staff and students.
Please note: the appointable candidate will be required to undergo a pre-placement medical test.
The 2013 annual remuneration for this 3-year, full-time contract position is between R239 200 and R341 717.
Please note the annual remuneration for 2014 is currently under review.
