Postdoctoral Fellowship
UCT HIV-TB Immunology and Pathogenesis Group
Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM)
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP in
the UCT HIV-TB Immunology and Pathogenesis Group - a group of the Institute of Infectious
Disease and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM), UCT. Candidates must have obtained their PhD degree within
5 years and have not held any permanent professional posts.
This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting, active research team involved in understanding aspects
of HIV pathogenesis. The successful applicant will be involved in conducting research within the two
areas that the lab focuses on, namely investigating mechanisms and mediators of immune activation in
HIV infection, as well as studying HIV-TB co-infection, and how HIV affects the immune response to
TB. Research in the laboratory is funded by the Wellcome Trust and NIH. More information on the lab

In addition to the research to be carried out, and as part of the candidates’ professional
development, the successful candidate will be required to:




Drive project objectives
Implement laboratory work to contribute to the objectives of the research
Compile and analyse immunological data
Publish results in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and through conference
presentation
The successful candidate will have:






A PhD in immunology
Relevant experience in an immunology laboratory, including working with clinical samples
Experience in advanced flow cytometry
Good organization and management skills
Knowledge of HIV and TB would be desirable
Computer literacy and a good breadth of data and statistical analysis tools
The fellowship is for one year, and renewal for a second year is possible subject to satisfactory
academic progress and availability of funds.
The value of the fellowship is R 200,000 per annum and an application will be made to SARS for taxexemption by the University on behalf of the successful candidate.
The successful incumbent must comply with the University's approved policies, procedures and
practices for the postdoctoral sector.
