MRS. KRUSE’S GUIDELINES FOR SUCCEEDING IN STATISTICS COURSE DESCRIPTION Statistics is all about gaining information from sets of data. Through exploring and interpreting data, surveying techniques, probability, logic, counting principles, and the use of statistics, students in this course will be able to analyze information so they can prosper in a data-driven world. This one semester course will provide students with an understanding of data that can be applied to a wide range of fields from politics and business to medicine and the social and natural sciences. . ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDINGS Formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them. Select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data. Develop and evaluate inferences and predictions that are based on data. Understand and apply basic concepts of probability. MATERIALS NEEDED Pencil Folder or Binder/ Loose-leaf paper Notebooks Textbook TI -83+ or 84 graphing calculator preferred GRADING Grading Scale: (As per student handbook) A+ = 98 to 100% B+ = 87 to 89% C+ = 78 to 80% A = 94 to 97% B = 84 to 86% C = 75 to 77% A- = 90 to 93% B- = 81 to 83% C- = 72 to 74% F = 62% and below Quarter Grades: Tests 55% Quizzes 35% Assignments/Projects 10% Semester Grades: D+ = 69 to 71% D = 66 to 68% D- = 63 to 65% Quarter 1 = 45% Quarter 2 = 45% Exam = 10% GRADED ACTIVITIES : Quizzes: Tests: One or more quizzes will be given for each chapter. A test will be given at the end of each chapter. Assignments/Projects: Specific assignments will be graded throughout the year. Projects will also be given throughout the semester. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES Homework: Every homework assignment will be worth 2 points. ALL WORK MUST BE SHOWN! If you don’t try all the problems or skip the last 2 or 3, you will receive only 1 point for the day. TRY ALL OF THE PROBLEMS. 1 MAKE UP PROCEDURES Report to your teacher as soon as you come back from an absence. BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS A student will be given one day to make up the work for each day absent. In the case of an extended absence, a mutual agreement must be reached with the teacher for completion of assignments. You can get extra help during the day or after school in room 244. You may use the bathroom pass with my permission only after I am finished teaching. 2. No purses/bags on desktops. 3. No cell phones or ipods in class. 4. When time is left in class, you must be working on math homework. 5. Bring all books and materials to class everyday. 6. Students must be in their seats before leaving class. 7. Be RESPONSIBLE Come to class daily and on time. Use restroom and water fountain BEFORE class. Be prepared for class every day with your supplies and homework. Follow class rules and directions the first time they are given. 8. ASK questions and participate in class discussions. 2 9. Give your BEST EFFORT Take good notes and stay on task. Review your notes daily when you do your homework. Complete work to the best of your ability. Study for quizzes and tests by redoing problems and checking your answers. 10. Show RESPECT Treat others with respect and you will receive it. Do not talk while others are involved in a class discussion. Use appropriate language at all times. Do not leave your desk without permission. 11. Be cooperative with all other students and the teacher. There is to be no talking when I am lecturing. If you have a question or comment, raise your hand. Discipline: Profanity, inappropriate language, etc. 1) Verbal directive/Warning 2) Parent contact and an after school detention. 3) Referral to administrator Severe infractions such as fighting, verbal/physical threats or defiance/insubordination will result in a direct office referral.
