First Time; National Block &
Bridle Convention set for
Texas Tech in
October

announced last month that for the
first time the university has been
selected to host the ‘2014 National
Block and Bridle Convention’ on
Oct. 23-25 in Lubbock. “We’ll
certainly welcome them to
Lubbock,” said CASNR Dean

After more than four decades of teaching, research and eventual administration of Texas Tech’s
Department of Plant and Soil Science, Richard Zartman has announced that he will retire from his post
as chairman and Leidigh Professor of Soil Physics. His last day will be Aug. 31. “Rick Zartman has done a
tremendous job overseeing both the department’s academics and research,” said Michael Galyean,
dean of Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. “He combines the highest level
of professionalism and expertise, and we will miss him.” more »

Texas Tech is once again offering a non-traditional classroom experience for cotton
industry professionals from across the globe, known as the Texas International Cotton
School. Running from Aug. 4-15, the High Plains program is two weeks of classes,
lectures, tours and hands-on interaction in all phases of cotton production, harvesting,
ginning, classing, testing, preparation and processing. more »
John Foley, a 1996 graduate of Texas Tech’s Department of Natural Resources
Management, has been named Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating
Officer for Greeley, Colo.-based JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, a massive cattle feeding
operation with capacity of more than 980,000 head of cattle with locations in
Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, and Idaho. more »

AFS doctoral candidates earn fellowships with French food safety
agency
Two doctoral students with Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences, Hattie
Webb from Amarillo and Josh Ison from Batavia, Ohio, have earned the opportunity to
do food safety research in France. The two standouts have been honored
with Chateaubriand Fellowships and will head to Maisons-Alfort (near Paris) in January
to work on research projects. more »
In Profile: NRM’s Angie Reid takes the heat of an adventurous science
career
Angie Reid expanded her world of science, making the most of her Tech experience
before graduating in 2007 by double majoring in range management and wildlife and
fisheries management. She also minored in natural history and humanities, biology and

issues. Brad Bellah, an agricultural communications major and sixth generation cattle
rancher, runs beef cattle operations in Texas and Colorado, including a natural beef

AFS graduate students receive 3-A SSI Student Travel Scholarship
Awards
Three graduate students from Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences
have awarded travel scholarships from 3-A Sanitary Standards, a non-profit
organization that focuses on enhancing product safety for consumers of food,
beverages and pharmaceutical products. more »
