WELCOME TO MS. SHOLTIS’ LANGUAGE ARTS CLASS, ROOM 310!
I am excited to start another year! Let’s make it a great one! Parents and guardians please read this with
your son/daughter. If you have any questions regarding any of the information below, please do not hesitate to
email me at ssholtis@bcsoh.org or call me at 330-273-0489. I am dedicated to helping you and your student
have a successful 8th grade year! PLEASE RETURN THE BOTTOM PORTION OF THE 2ND PAGE SIGNED
BY YOU AND YOUR SON/DAUGHTER.
EXPECTATIONS:
1. REQUIRED SUPPLIES: (Please bring the following supplies to class on or before Friday, August 29.)
*3-ring binder
*Notebook paper
*Highlighter
*5 dividers with tabs
*Pencils
*Different colored pens
*Colored pencils/markers
***You are expected to bring your binder, supplies, L.A. textbook, and workbook to class daily!***
2. SUMMER READING: In the June newsletter of the previous school year the required summer reading novel for all 8th graders was given. All
students should have read either the book Touching Spirit Bear or Flipped and be ready for class discussions and an assessment. If your
student has not yet completed the summer reading, please have him/her do so quickly as the novel’s assessment will be the first week of
September. Having a copy of the book in class will be very helpful but is not required.
3. HOMEWORK: Please expect homework to be assigned approximately 2-3 times per week. I do accept late homework for a reduction in
points.
4. ABSENT WORK: It is YOUR responsibility to pick up the absent work you miss when you return to school from your period’s folder in the
back of the classroom. You are also responsible for copying any in-class notes taken during your absence. Ask a friend or Ms. Sholtis for
any assistance. I am always willing to help out! As per school policy, a student will be given the same number of days as the absence to
make up any missed work unless other arrangements have been made (i.e.: an extensive absence due to illness or another emergency
issue).
5. CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR: These classroom rules will be strictly enforced.
1. Be respectful and courteous to others.
2. Follow directions and listen carefully.
3. Come prepared to class with all work, supplies, and materials.
6. OTHER BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES:
1. Be in seats and ready to learn at the start of class. Do not be late!
2. Talk only after raising your hand and being acknowledged by the instructor.
3. Restroom/water breaks after class begins will be permitted if your agenda is brought to class.
7. CONSEQUENCES: All disciplinary action is at the discretion of the teacher and/or administration.
1. Warning
2. Writing assignment
3. Demerits
4. Parent contact
5. Office referral
8. GRADING POLICY: I follow the district’s standard based grading policy. Assessments are worth 90%, and homework/classwork is worth
10% of a student’s total grade. Any student found copying, cheating, or sharing answers will receive a “0” for that assignment. If you have a
question about a grade, please check your scores on Progress Book or contact Ms. Sholtis at school. See
www.brunswickschools.org/willetts for information on how to access your learner’s grades.
9. L.A. TOPICS OF STUDY: We will be very busy in language arts this year! Some of the bigger year long topics we will cover include
grammar, the 5-paragraph essay, literary elements, letter writing, and OAT preparation. We will be reading the novels Hero and The
Outsiders and creating autobiographies in May after OATs. Honors language arts students will move at a slightly faster pace, will read To Kill
a Mockingbird, and will encounter various other enrichment opportunities throughout the year.
Once again, welcome to 8th grade Language Arts! Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!
Please return this bottom portion signed by you and your parents. Extra credit will be awarded for returning
this slip!
I have read this letter and the Wizard Team Brochure and have discussed both with my child. We are fully aware of the expectations for this
eighth grade school year.
